In this course you will learn all of the fundamental skills required to paint convincing still life paintings in oils. The course will include; setting up and lighting an engaging still life set up, a clear explanation of oil paints, mediums and brushes including how to use them effectively. Thorough demonstrations and practise sessions where you will also learn how to judge and mix accurate colours as well as controlling values and edges. More about Still Life Painting in Oils: The course is structured in a way that each exercise has a specific focus. Still life painting, as with other realist painting genres, can be divided up into three main areas; drawing, value and colour. During the course you will be given demonstrations and exercises to help your understanding of each of these areas, before combining them in a finished painting . Throughout each of the three elements mentioned above the associated exercises will teach you how to simplify complex challenges into more manageable chunks, building your confidence and providing you with a reliable approach that you can apply to your future work. For example, accurate drawing is one of the most challenging aspects of realist painting. The exercises in this course will show you how to simplify your subject into a very simple basic shape, which you can then gradually refine into increasingly smaller shapes until you eventually arrive at the finished, accurate drawing. This ‘simplification’ approach will also be applied to both value and colour. Learning to ‘see’ shapes and ‘simplify them is key to realist painting. This course is suitable for beginner to intermediate artists and the tuition will be adapted to your own individual needs.

What's included in the price?

A basic set of paints and brushes, as well as boards to paint on, will be provided, but if you have your own that you would prefer to use then please bring them along. Both residential and non-residential rates are available. Residential options are fully inclusive with all meals provided. Non-residential options include suppers, lunches and all refreshments and exclude B&B.
