2 day Introduction to Green Woodworking course in the beautiful Stanwick Lakes nature reserve. Make a rustic stool or side table using traditional tools and techniques!
This introductory Green Woodwork course is an ideal opportunity to try a great traditional craft. You’ll start this course by being given a simple ash log and end it with your own unique piece of rustic furniture.
Traditional tools and techniques will be used throughout the two days, including froes, shave horses and drawknives. By the end of the first day you will have produced all your stool legs and braces and these will be gently dried overnight. The following day you will be carefully aligning your mortise and tenon joints and fitting the various pieces together.
Trading Places is based within the beautiful surroundings of the Stanwick Lakes nature reserve, in the heart of Northamptonshire’s Nene Valley. All of our courses take place in and around our purpose built green oak Training Barn. Course places can be booked for one or more people depending on availability. However, if you are looking for a larger group booking (such as a work team building event, a group of friends or an alternative hen or stag 'do') we are very happy to discuss your requirements with you.
Visit the Trading Places website to check availability and to book your place.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
Tools, materials and safety equipment are provided for all courses. Participants are simply asked to bring their own supply of enthusiasm and a packed lunch! (we provide tea and coffee during the courses).
For anyone who is travelling some distance and would like to look at local accommodation, please see our website for a list (under the Directions tab). Please note that these businesses are local to the site but are not linked to Trading Places in anyway.

Absolutely loved this course. Mark was very knowledgable, helpful and encouraging. I have come away with a beautiful, unique stool which I am so proud of. Brilliant course. I’d recommend to anyone.
What can I say? I had absolutely brilliant time on this course. As a complete novice (but with an interest in woodwork) this course was perfect. Mark was clear in his instructions. Also explaining how we got to have the logs in front of us, and giving us a little lesson in the parts of a tree trunk, which I thought was a nice touch. I would definitely go on this course again, and I'm thinking of signing up for the spoon carving course Mark also holds.
I think I may have fallen in love with green woodworking!
My brother Sam had an amazing time with you this weekend. My father was supposed to attend (xmas gift) but sadly he passed away very unexpectedly earlier this year. The furniture Sam produced will therefore always have special meaning for us as a family. Sam told us the course was a very special experience so thank you once again.
Yet again trading post did it again for me.hell you lot are great helpful and most of all fun fun fun. Great group, superb instruction (even when he spent most of his time assisting with his first ever square legged stable) .May have to come again as my 6 year old has claimed it as hers and does everything from eating breakfast on it to her colouring books. Thanx guys, great time and have been recommending.
This is the second course I have been on at Trading Places, both excellent. Mark was a great instructor, very patient and had time for everyone in a very relaxed atmosphere. I thoruughly enjoyed my weekend and came home with a lovely table. :)
This was a fantastic course and the second one I’ve done at trading places. Excellent instructor, great atmosphere, very good value for money and I went home with a really impressive piece of furniture. I have already recommended it to friends.
A very relaxed , welcoming and supportive environment. The tutor was clear in his instructions and demonstrations. A group of only six gave plenty of time for individual attention when needed . Tools were in good condition and plenty available for most steps of the project . Mark organised the time so we had other tasks to do while waiting our turn with the powered tools (which were only used when necessary ! )
A very enjoyable and rewarding course - I've already signed up for another training day with this tutor
Great course and great teacher. it was good to lean how to make a stool with the use of hand tools and not using nails and glue. I would recommend this course to anyone interested in making things out of green wood. wish I had found out about this course sooner. I will be looking into taking more courses like this. Mark was very helpful to everyone on the course and he didn't just stand and watch he took his time to show us the right way to make our stools. he also explained every step in great detail. I would give mark 10 out of 10.
Fantastic, head clearing and productive weekend. The stool I made will be well used!
