Description

Thinking figuratively with porcelain; teaching technique and encouraging imagination. Working with figurative porcelain will challenge you to see porcelain in a new light and explore its expressive potential. Over the weekend, you will learn techniques for sculpting and molding porcelain. You will also learn how to experiment with different textures and shapes to create truly unique and imaginative pieces. By the end of the two days, you'll have created thoughtful and imaginative sculptures. Explore the endless possibilities of figurative porcelain and unleash your creativity. Ceramicist Sophie Woodrow will help you hone your skills, challenge your thinking, and inspire your imagination. Participants in the workshop will engage with a balance of technical and creative exercises, that will help them to meet the challenges of working with porcelain, and allows them to explore the exciting potential of this surprising material. You will complete a technical piece, helping you to develop a repertoire of decorative techniques, and teaching you how to give your works structural integrity. You will also be assisted in making your own piece of work that is your response to figuration. Ceramicist Sophie will be on hand to help technically, and discuss any of the ideas that may be inspiring you to make. We will explore the relationship between clay and the body, the ceramic vessel and figurative sculpture. Sophie will also discuss the underlying themes that inspire her ceramics from making "psychological portraiture" to using "porcelain as a celebration of light". Students will gain the confidence to use porcelain as a hand-building material, and be given the opportunity to reflect on the next place their creativity may take them. This workshop is for those who have some experience in working with clay, but not necessarily porcelain. Those who want to take a moment to expand their practise, both technically and perceptively.

Unfortunately, we do not have our own designated car park, however there are plenty around Cirencester. The nearest short stay car park is The Brewery Car Park which is approximately 2 minutes away and is a council run pay and display. This car park has several disabled parking spaces too. Sheep Street Car Park is a longer stay car park 3 minutes away, it is a cashless car park facilitated by Pay by Phone. Full details of all car parks and pricing can be found on Cotswold District Council Website.

We pride ourselves on smaller class sizes, so you get plenty of help from the tutors. Maximum 8-10 students per class.

Of course, and for some classes we may ask you to do this. Please don’t worry, if this is the case it will be clearly shown on the booking pages and in your confirmation emails.

No, we ask that students either bring their own or wear clothes they are happy to get messy in.
