One night stand: Writing the landscape - a crash course in place writing

In the past year, our familiar surroundings have become uncanny; travel, an unwieldy memory. For many writers, engagement with place is key, and it has taken a hit. This crash course will reignite your language of the landscape, borrowing strategies and inspiration from diverse sources. From contemporary landscape art and classic psycho-geography to ambient music and film noir – to help cut through writer’s block and refresh your take on places old and new.

We have worn out our soles walking the same streets each day, and memorised the home-office wallpaper. A kind of mission creep has entered our language: the places we knew so well seem uncanny; visiting someplace new is just a memory. For many writers, engaging with place – be that as a setting for a novel, colour for a memoir or the central subject of our work – is a key component of the job.

And it’s out of joint.

Writing the Landscape is a crash course in revitalising that engagement. Whether you’re back to roaming the country, or just trying to crush writer’s block in an all-too-familiar home, the strategies, prompts and inspirations we’ll discuss will be useful in sparking that all-important change.

For Writing the Landscape, we look at writers and artists whose work offers a new lens through which to view our surroundings. While touching on philosophies of landscape – especially those relevant to environmental change – this one-night stand bootcamp is about tools: prompts, concepts and strategies that we can take with us – into the field, out on the street, or when facing the white stare of a blank page.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 8 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
