This is a structured practical class where you will learn new design skills to help you develop your personal language in mixed media jewellery making. Explore a range of personal media to create a series of samples and prototypes. The emphasis over the three sessions is to explore methods of combining materials as well as thinking more deeply about the design cycle in relation to mixed media works. Students are welcome to use the course to develop samples and tests, or work towards making a final piece of mixed media jewellery.
The group will work through a series of practical design and making exercises to help develop new ways of combining materials. Working from home, each student will choose their own materials and techniques and through experimentation develop new samples. Advanced students will be encouraged to develop their use of the design cycle to produce more personal works, whilst incorporating new techniques or refining processes. Students will provide their own tools and materials, and this can be tailored towards individual interests and budget. There is complete flexibility in the choice of materials, taking into account current restrictions on shopping.
Students do not need to have access to a jewellery studio, a kitchen table is sufficient, but if students do have a home studio they are welcome to use it. As mixed media jewellery can include virtually any material, students may choose to use what they already have at home or source some materials online. You will have the opportunity to see a lecture on mixed media jewellery to put the course into context.
Learners are encouraged to keep a technical notebook. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive online environment. There will be an opportunity to ask professional development questions tailored towards individual interests.
