Experimental (loose and free) watercolours

Your tutor

Continuing on from other teaching she has been doing on Zoom since June 2020 Donna has now decided to offer her popular ‘experimental watercolour’ class online. Both beginners and improvers are more than welcome to attend. The group will meet on a Monday to explore this wonderful medium (and mix in some other mediums along the way).
Watercolour can be an unpredictable and spontaneous medium and these classes will give you the opportunity to experiment and have fun with it.

The first week or two will be a focus on materials / equipment and techniques – with a chance for you to ask any questions that you may have. And from then onwards we will focus on a different project or specific technique each week.

Classes will include demonstrations and then you will have a go at using a variety of experimental techniques yourself, with support from your tutor. Although watercolour paints will be the main medium, learners may also incorporate other media (including collage, inks, gouache & acrylic) into the work they produce.

As part of the course, we will also be looking at the work of different watercolour / mixed media artists who will be the inspiration for some of the sessions.

We’ll also use an App as a platform for sharing / critiquing the work each week. (Don’t worry if this sounds scary to you – Donna can talk you through it). Although the sessions will be of a practical nature, slide presentations and short videos will also form part of the teaching / learning experience.

During the course learners of all levels will be encouraged to develop their own creative style using experimental watercolour techniques.

This course is designed for artists of any ability (from complete beginners onwards) who are interested in using loose watercolour techniques or who would like to introduce more texture into their work. The only prerequisite would be for learners enrolling to be prepared to experiment and make mistakes as they explore this unpredictable medium in more depth.

Please see below for some reviews from students who have attended recent online courses delivered by the same tutor:

“I have attended Donna’s classes for the last 2 and half years. She has always been both instructive and inspirational, full of ideas and enthusiasm as well as patient and supportive. I have attended a lot of art classes, particularly over the last 14 years and achieved more with Donna than most.”

“Zoom can never replace 'face to face' but with Donna as art tutor it was as good as it can get. I really enjoyed her online Zoom Summer courses, original ideas and the stimulus to actually want to sit-down and paint and sketch in between sessions. Donna's clear demonstrations and balanced critique made for two very enjoyable and worthwhile courses. Would I sign up again? Yes !”

“I really enjoyed the Summer sketchbooks course as it encouraged me to work independently and reflect on my work. An interesting stimulus was provided every session which helped to develop drawing and painting skills through a creative approach. The padlet idea was great as it allowed feedback from Donna and other learners. Thanks Donna”

“I have attended and enjoyed Donna’s real and virtual art classes, sketchbooks sessions and workshops in watercolour and lino cutting. She brings fresh ideas and challenges into the classes and is always supportive and full of enthusiasm for everyone’s work be it beginners or improver. I like the friendliness of her classes and the way we are able to interact with each other on Zoom.”

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

Your tutor - Donna Maria Taylor - is a professional practicing artist and qualified Further / Higher Education tutor (PGCE in Post Compulsory Education) who has been teaching adults in a wide range of settings for over 20 years. For the last 10 years+ she has been employed by her local council as a senior tutor and observer and during this time has delivered many arts & craft-based classes and workshops (including experimental watercolours) in venues throughout her local area: including libraries, museums and art galleries. She also runs (in normal times) regular painting / drawing classes in her local area and offer private workshops and art holidays. Donna began teaching online in June 2020 and has taught a range of courses online since then. All courses are taught ‘live’, and numbers are restricted, so you get that feeling of belonging to a group and also hopefully get to know one another a little.

What you will need

Basic watercolour materials;
You’ll definitely need watercolour paper to work on (Donna recommends practice paper NOT 280 gsm or above). Plus, either a watercolour set / watercolour tubes, brushes, masking tape, 2 x waterpots, a palette (or ceramic plate) and ideally some water-soluble pencils.

Additionally, you will also need a general ‘kit’ on top of this to dip into. This could include white gouache, a wax candle, wax crayons / oil pastels, posca pens and a variety of other mixed media…but a more comprehensive list will be provided at the start of the course. PLEASE NOTE - YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GET ALL OF THESE TO START THE COURSE. It would actually be better if you attended the materials session first before deciding on what to invest in.

Donna will also provide a more comprehensive list at that time and advise what equipment / materials are essential and which are just optional. If you are not sure what to get, your tutor can advise you on your pre-course meet up.

Donna will also be on hand to advise you at each stage of the course..
