Line and Watercolour Wash with John Harrison in the Yorkshire Dales

We are delighted to be able to welcome John back to Broadrake again for Spring 2024. A relaxed, interactive, informal day delving into the mysteries of line and wash in John's unique style. Broadrake, in the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park, has amazing views all around and no shortage of inspirational subject matter. The day will give an insight into John's style with demonstrations and exercises. You will carry out exercises using inspiring reference images of the local Dales landscape, with a focus on the iconic barns of the Yorkshire Dales. Final pieces will be working from your choice of reference images to the final ink drawing and application of light watercolour washes to create a loose lively painting (or three) 10.00 am to 4.00 pm with a break for lunch. If you have a favourite view or barn then please bring along hard copy to work from, but there will be plenty of other images to choose from. John is Yorkshire born and bred, proud of his home county which provides the inspiration for much of his work. He specializes in line and wash, a style that superbly captures the beauty and atmosphere of Yorkshire's landscape, towns and villages.

What's included in the price?

All reference material, watercolour paper and a Uni pen are included. Please bring your own paints, brushes and a sketchbook, plus a packed lunch. Hot and cold drinks and home baking will be available all day. A materials list will be provided after booking, with suggested palette colours and brush sizes etc.

We have been hosting workshops for over 8 years using experienced tutors with excellent teaching skills. We focus more on heritage & greenwood workshops, with an emphasis on willow basketry to ensure that traditional skills are not lost. Working hands-on is great for mental-well being & taking home hand-crafted items is very rewarding. We are in a stunning setting in the Yorkshire Dales with amazing views of Ribblehead Viaduct, using an upstairs open plan venue in a converted barn also used as quality bunkbarn accommodation.
