About the Course
Ever since I made my first piece of jewellery using Keum Boo I have been fascinated by the possibilities of this technique, and by the fact that such a rich gold colour can be added to silver without breaking the bank! Keum Boo literally translates as "attached gold" and permanently bonds 24k gold to silver.
The workshop will teach you to produce two or three pieces of jewellery of your own using this beautiful technique, or one more complex piece if you have previous experience of soldering.
Topics covered include:
*Sawing, piercing, filing and sanding silver
*Preparing sterling silver through depletion gilding
*texturing silver sheet
*making and attaching bails and earwires
*and, of course, different methods of attaching the gold foil.
You will also be taught about the equipment required for carrying out Keum Boo work at home and will take information sheets away with you, together with any left over gold foil.
This tuition does not require any previous experience of silversmithing, but previous experience is useful if you wish to make a complicated piece - I can advise you on this if you email me before the workshop. All but two photos of the jewellery shown here are of students' work.
Only 8 places are available to ensure that everyone gets the help and attention they need.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
The workshop fee includes 4cm by 4cm of sterling silver sheet, suitable for creating two or three simple pieces of jewellery, plus a sheet of 24k gold worth £20. Any gold foil and silver sheet left at the end of the workshop is, of course, yours to take and use at home.
Tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits are in plentiful supply, but please bring your own lunch. We are a peanut-free venue, thank you.
I really enjoyed this class with Joanne. The Sorting Office studios are a great venue with plenty of room for everyone. Joanne is an excellent teacher who gave clear explanations and demonstrated what was required at each stage of the process. I made a pair of earrings and 2 pendants. The other people taking part ranged from complete novices to those with lots of experience. Everyone left with 2 or 3 pieces of jewellery.
I have continued to use the technique at home using an electric hot plate and 24 carat gold leaf. Keum boo is a great, inexpensive way to add a touch of luxe to your jewellery.

Response from Joanne Tinley Jewellery:Thank you for your lovely review Diana! It was lovely having you in the studio, especially considering the distance you had travelled. Great to hear that you're continuing to use the skills you learnt in the class!
