About the Course
The aim of our summer school is to demonstrate through fun and informative experience how to develop a piece or a collection of jewellery from the initial inspiration stage to the final polish!
We will cover drawing and sketching from life and found objects, the translation of these sketches into design ideas, rendering your final design in either two or three dimensions and then creating the piece or pieces in silver, copper or gold.
You will end your week with a series of preparatory drawings and / or maquette's and the finished piece of jewellery as well as, hopefully, a large smile!
This course is open to all levels of experience from complete beginners to the more advanced we will also give guidance on working to commission and setting up in business for those who wish to take their skills further.
As with all our courses there are only eight spaces available and with two of us teaching we can give everyone the maximum attention.
SATURDAY - We will go out into the Dorset countryside ( location TBC ) with a picnic (weather permitting !) where you can sketch the beautiful scenery or flora, collect textures and interesting objects. - YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE ABLE TO DRAW ...HONESTLY!! - but you do need sensible shoes!
SUNDAY - We will gather our exciting sketches and objects together and begin to translate them into jewellery ideas. Producing rough sketches and scribbles which we can then translate into a final drawing or three dimensional model.
MONDAY - In the morning, beginners will make a simple ring in order to familiarize themselves with the basic jewellery making techniques. After this we will commence work on the actual piece. More advanced students can work on their pieces straight away unless a refresher is preferred!
TUESDAY - Continuation with designs.
WEDNESDAY - A well earned rest day!
THURSDAY - Continuation with designs
FRIDAY - Finishing the piece or pieces and a review of everyone's fabulous achievements!!
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

Excellent in every respect. This was my second visit to Flux ‘n Flame, but my first summer school, which allowed more time to develop ideas. As always Jesa and Al were superb in their patience, clear explanations and general encouragement. I came away feeling that I’d definitely learned new skills and had the goods to prove it. Although I have to travel a great distance to get to Dorset, it’s worth every bit of the effort. I shall return!

This year was my sixth summer on the course, and remains the highlight of summer. I can't imagine not having it to look forward to! Jesa and Al are the best (and nicest!) teachers I have come across. Whilst they give the time and attention needed, what amazes me everytime that sometimes it only takes a few words or a few seconds to discover a new idea or skill. Awesome!

I've been to the summer school twice, and I'll definitely go again. It's amazing to spend a week making jewellery and enjoying the Dorset countryside. Jesa and Al are patient, friendly and helpful, always trying to think of a way that things can be done. This year I spent a couple of days designing, tried new techniques and made some pieces I'm very pleased with. Can't recommend this highly enough. I love it, and can't wait for the next one.

This is the 4th year I have been to Summer School at Flux'n'Flame. and I highly recommend this course. My first year I was a complete beginner and I walked away with a bracelet using several different techniques. The course is suitable for both beginners and experienced silversmiths as Jesa and Al are available to teach, assist and discuss designs at all times. My confidence has grown with each visit to tackle something new and more complex each time. No design is ever viewed as too complicated and Jesa and Al will always look at the best way to achieve what you want. Their knowledge is immense and nothing is ever too much trouble. Aside from their teaching skill their workshop is fully kitted out with all the tools you could possibly need to make your piece of jewellery. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and everyone is made to feel extremely welcome. It is the highlight of my year, I'm devastated I can't attend next year due to my brothers wedding but I've already made the gifts at this years summer school! I will be sneaking in a weekend course to tide me over. Thank you Jesa an Al for another wonderful week.

I've just been to Flux n Flame for the fifth year running and it was just as magical as it was the first time! Jesa and Al have endless patience and are always at hand to give encouragement and advice. I've learnt loads of new things every time and always love my creations. It's my favourite week of the year, can't wait for summer school number six

I was a newbie to silversmithing when I went on the course but by the end of the week I felt confident in the basics to then go home and begin to create.
Jesa and Al were amazing at explaining every step of the process with clarify and patience.
I came away with a reticulated bracelet and a pebble ring, the pebble sat in a bezel and held in place with silver tendrils. Lovely!
Besides the work, the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, I had an amazing week.

I will be returning for my fourth Summer School in 2014, which is a testament to how much I enjoy the experience. The tools and facilities are great. Jesa and Al give you the confidence to try new techniques and give advise and help when you encounter a problem.
Would like more emphasis on design on the first days.
