This starts with an overview of common furniture woods and their qualities as well as the basic hand tools and how to sharpen and maintain them. Students will be introduced to basic woodworking techniques while making a beautiful wooden box in their choice of timber, with a few options for all skill levels. Finally, they will try out some finishing techniques before choosing one for their box. Next term starts in September 2019 (see our website for the schedule of dates)
The Tutor - Phil Lyons;
Phil has always been inclined toward woodwork and hand skills. He graduated from Bucks New University over ten years ago and since that time he has started and successfully built a furniture restoration business. During that time he has made a concerted effort to study all the different ways that furniture is made. Some of his specialties are frame and chair construction, marquetry, gilding, among other areas. He has designed a series of courses which together will teach students most aspects of furniture making. All of this will be in context of making several beautiful objects including a small box, a windsor chair.

I really enjoyed this course, and like everyone on it, signed up for the intermediate one once it finished. Phil believes in hands on stuff, and despite his obvious knowledge provides support and tools rather than lectures, so you really do spend your time doing real stuff, which suited me. We had novices and some quite knowledgeable people on both courses and everyone seemed to get what they wanted out of it so five stars from me.
