Introduction to Traditional 6 Strand Rattan Cane Weaving - Edinburgh

X

Description

This beginner's one day class is for those who wish to learn the traditional 6 strand cane weaving pattern. This woven seating technique can be applied to restoration projects or frame design to develop new work by furniture designer-makers. I will demonstrate each stage and guide you through cane-weaving a practice frame during our day together in the studio, and I'll show you how the finishing techniques of pegging, couching and beading will complete the work. You will have your completed sample frame to take home, receive a comprehensive handout illustrating each stage of the technique, details of where to purchase tools and materials along with sufficient cane to reweave your frame for additional practice at a later date. Please feel free to bring along any rattan restoration pieces you may have to discuss with the group if there is sufficient time. Covid 19 Precautions: The course has a maximum of six participants so we can maintain social distancing in the bench room. The equipment is sanitised prior to your arrival and there is hand sanitiser available for your use. The tutor Isabelle Moore, is an award-winning designer maker who has been making furniture for 25 years will deliver these courses. She has extensive teaching experience both at home and abroad and is passionate about empowering others to achieve their creative goals. The shared workshop facility at Albion Business Centre is Edinburgh’s premier furniture making workshop and home to exceptional makers, so participating students can gain an insight into the professional craft environment of Scottish furniture making and projects currently underway.
