Dry stone walling: For a great day outside in the country on our beautiful Lakeland farm, learning traditional dry stone walling skills from a friendly and expert tutor who will explain and demonstrate the whole process.
Richard Halliday will introduce to this ancient rural craft using only the stone in the fields. You will learn basic principles - sorting stone, building foundations, constructing a section of wall and developing your confidence as you go. Richard studied Wildlife Management at the University of Central Lancashire. He set up his own business in 2006 working as a Stone mason, building and mending traditional Lakeland Dry Stone walls and using his expertise in stone masonry for a wide variety of building projects. Richard & his team have built/ mended many of the walls on the farm. Richard is passionate about his skills and loves working out in the countryside.
This workshop will be at Cowshed Creative, based in a converted Lakeland barn on our traditional family Farm. The art studio is a stunning open plan space with plenty of room to wander outside and take inspiration from the amazing Lakeland landscape and environment of the peaceful Kentmere valley. Make it a special break and stay in one of our luxury camping pods on the farm. Check out our website for details.

All our tutors are carefully selected professionals and experts. Whilst this is a relatively new venture, George, who has set up Cowshed Creative, has many years of experience programming and running creative courses at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and for Cumbria Adult Education.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
The workshop fee includes some great tuition, a stunning venue and a tasty 2 course lunch with home baked bread, cake and refreshments throughout the day. We like to finish the day with a cup of tea and slice of cake. Eat outside or enjoy lunch by the wood burner.

I thoroughly enjoyed the dry stone walling workshop. We had an experienced, encouraging and patient tutor, the setting was stunning, the home made food was delicious and I finished the day very proud of the wall our group had built together and confident I'd be able to continue walling on my own. I'll definitely be considering other Cowshed Creative workshops in the future.
Response from Cowshed Creative (Kentmere Farm Pods and Creative Courses):Thanks Julia. The wall you all built looks great. Look forward to seeing you again.
I recently attended the Dry Stone Walling Course at the Cowshed. The day was 'hands on' and very instructive. Richard, the course tutor, was very experienced and extremely knowledgeable about the course content. His relaxed style put everyone quickly at their ease and whilst the instruction and activity was testing (some of the stones weighed a ton - only joking) the day was very enjoyable and passed rapidly.
I would thoroughly recommend this course. The farm surroundings, in the heart of the glorious Lake District, really raised your spirits and the care and attention paid to the arrangements and in particular the refreshments was first class. Well done and thank you to George and Richard.
Response from Cowshed Creative (Kentmere Farm Pods and Creative Courses):Thanks David for such lovely comments. We hope to see you again.
The host on the day was very welcoming and provided excellent refreshments throughout the day. The venue was perfect, with safe social distancing being practiced at all times.
The course was a good introduction to dry stone walling. The instructor was very knowledgeable about his craft and provided excellent 'hands-on' tuition.
I would have liked more written information to take away on the day but overall it was a really good crafting experience.
Response from Cowshed Creative (Kentmere Farm Pods and Creative Courses):Thanks for such positive comments Carol. Richard already has plans in place to improve the hand-outs. Hope to see you and David again.
