About the Course
This course takes place at Ammonite Yarns, in Pontyclun, South Wales, several times a year.
(What used to be a block 6-week course has now been split into two parts — "Complete Beginners" and "Beyond Beginners"— bookable separately and taught independently.)
The next course will take place on Fridays 10-17-24 January 2020, from 1pm till 3pm.
This initial "Complete Beginners" 3-week course covers the basic stitches and techniques:
Sessions 1&2: learning how to work straight rows of all the basic stitches, how NOT to lose or gain stitches, plus many essential tips and techniques.
Session 3: learning how to work in the round, how to make granny squares and how to join them.
All 3 sessions include the basics of how to read crochet charts.
This course enables students to tackle a variety of simple projects on their own.
It is suitable for
- complete novices,
- people who gave crochet a go with books and/or videos, but got confused and gave up,
- what I like to call "rusty hooks" (people who may have crocheted many years ago, but seem to have forgotten how it's done),
- crocheters who tend to wing it and who would like to learn the "proper" techniques and terminology.
This 3-week course costs £45 and can be booked with a £15 deposit on the Ammonite Yarns website (where the "Book online" link at the top of this page will take you).
Numbers are limited to 5 places in order to give each student the best tuition possible, so booking is essential!
A note on attendance: please make sure you can attend all three sessions before booking a place on this course, as there is a clear progression path between lessons.
We are unable to refund partially attended courses. Deposits are non-refundable, but there may be the option to transfer to the next course if you cannot attend at all. This is however entirely at the discretion of Ammonite Yarns.
*About Ammonite Yarns*
It is a nice little yarn shop, run by the lovely Ruth and Jenny, on the main street of Pontyclun (Llantrisant Road). The classes take place in the workshop room at the back.
Access by public transport is easy. The shop is right by Pontyclun train station. It is also very near bus stops for the 404 bus (Pontypridd -Bridgend), the 64 bus (Talbot Green - Bridgend), the 321 bus (Talbot Green - Llantwit) and the 122 bus (Tonypandy - Cardiff).
Parking is relatively straightforward, with the rugby club car park across the road and many residential side streets around the shop (this is where I usual choose to park, either on School St or Lewis St). There's also a free council car park on the other side of the village (5 minutes walk), but it is often full. The layby in front of the shop is limited to half an hour, which is perfect for a quick yarn dash, but sadly not suitable if attending a class.
The shop is wheelchair accessible, but please double check with them if you have a particularly wide chair. However, toilets are upstairs only, with no lift.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Unlimited tea/coffee and biscuits!
Yarns and hooks are provided for the first session only, after which you need to purchase your own (advice will be given).
Ammonite Yarns offer a lovely starter kit (containing a hook set and a few useful tools) that students can purchase for only £10.

Gaëlle is a fantastic crochet tutor! I’d wanted to learn for years and had tried books and video tutorials to no avail. After the beginner course of 3 sessions I was able to read a simple pattern and started a granny square blanket. Gaëlle is a patient and encouraging tutor and she provided clear and relevant handouts to support the lessons. I would not hesitate to recommend the course.

An excellent course with a lovely, patient tutor - just what every beginner needs! The handouts were instructive and clear, giving the essentials of what we needed to know for the course; the class was an ideal size with everyone receiving the guidance they needed from Gaelle. I now have the confidence to tackle crochet patterns on my own and look forward to attending more of Gaelle's crochet courses in future.

I have thoroughly enjoyed learning to crochet with Gaelle. The course has provided all the essentials needed to give me the confidence to pick up a pattern and have a go!! The tips Gaelle has shared and the hand outs are really helpful. Thank you Gaelle.

Excellent course. Excellent and VERY patient teacher! Very useful handouts given in each session. I now know how to do different types of stitches, decreasing and increasing. And most important how to read a pattern! Money well spent....:-)

Gaelle's Crochet for Beginners six week course was excellent. St the end of week one I made a patterned scarf!
Gaelle is very knowledgable, extremely affable and flexes her approach to meet varying standards and speeds of learning.
Her handouts are excellent and Inhavr a skill for life. I can't wait to go on the next course!

Gaelle advertised a one day "refresher" course which was just what I needed having taught myself to crochet many years ago and not quite sure what I was doing! It turned out that because someone had cancelled at the last minute, I was the only pupil. Gaelle kindly still ran the session which was brilliant. She is such a good teacher; very patient and answered all my questions. She gave handouts too which are very useful. I would thoroughly recommend her.

Gaelle is such a good tutor, everything is clearly explained(brilliant handouts) and if you do make a mistake she shows you where it went wrong and shows you so clearly how to correct it. Nothing is too daunting every new step appears so easy and before you know it you can do a variety of stitches, and can make squares, baskets and hats and you have the know how to branch out to other projects too.I have been totally inspired, tonight is the last lesson of the beginners course and I wish it wasn't the last, I have had such fun. I would definitely recommend this course to everyone.Just great!

Gaelle has a lovely reassuring teaching style that is motivating whilst giving feedback in order that you can progress through her lessons. Plenty of advice and one to one help. I am now using my new found skills to make squares that will eventually 'grow up' into a blanket. Easy to follow hand-outs for reference.
