About the Course

Our 2020 inspiring workshop programme at Cowshed Creative is now on OUR website (purple tab above) with full details and info on how to book.

Learn a traditional rural craft and make your own timeless round basket with a handle. A course for anyone who likes to use their hands, enjoys the smell and
creaking of willow as they work on their woven basket and wants the satisfaction of
creating something unique with lots of practical uses. This two day course will equip you with the skills to make a truly original basket and provide you with the confidence and ability to work on further baskets at home. No previous experience required.

Alongside advice on how to order and soak willow and what tools to use, you will be
given advice on foraging for materials in the garden or hedgerow, and how to incorporate these into your designs. Based on a traditional English round base basket, you can choose from a variety of handle options: traditional handles, inbuilt handles or using a step-rimmed, less conventional lashed-stick handle with contemporary design elements. Which ever you choose, your basket will stand out!

Hannah Ehlert trained for three years in a coppice worker apprenticeship with a variety of crafts people at the Bill Hogarth Memorial Trust. She has run successful creative green wood-working courses for nine years, including; hazel wattle hurdles, Swedish spoons and greenwood carving and baskets and willow structures in the garden. She also runs family and Adult Nature Connection courses and works as a qualified Forest School practitioner. Hannah’s classes are fun and sociable, whilst also providing quiet, relaxing time, allowing you to become deeply absorbed in your own project and connecting with natural materials

This workshop will be at Cowshed Creative, based in a traditional converted Lakeland barn at Browfoot Farm. The art studio is a stunning open plan space with plenty of room to wander outside and take inspiration from the amazing Lakeland landscape and environment of the peaceful Kentmere valley. Make it a special break and stay in a camping pod on the farm. Check out our website for availability.

All our tutors are carefully selected professionals and experts with extensive teaching experience. Whilst this is a relatively new venture, George, who set up Cowshed Creative, has many years of experience programming and running creative courses at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and for Cumbria Adult Education.

Fantastic day in a wonderful location. Hannah was very thorough & encouraging & it was great to be able to produce a simple basket in a day. The barn opens out onto beautiful views of the Kentmere valley & we were able to sit outside for a delicious lunch of homemade soup & cakes.
Perfect!
