2 day basket making course in the Stanwick Lakes nature reserve - suitable for beginners and more advanced learners.
Our 1 day ‘Introduction to Basket Making’ course has been so popular we now provide a 2 day course as well. It is still suitable for people who are new to basket making but is also designed for those who would like to develop their skills and techniques further.
Beginners will have the rewarding experience of learning a new skill and taking home a pair of small round willow baskets (or one larger basket) that they have made themselves. Discover how to use a bodkin and a rapping iron as you prepare your slathes, create a base and then weave the sides of your traditional willow baskets.
If you’ve already been on a course to learn the basics then this is a great opportunity to try some more advanced techniques! You can also choose to make either 2 smaller baskets or one larger basket – and then learn how to include different weaves, borders and handles into your work.
Depending on previous experience an introduction to oval or square work may also be possible. The group size is limited to just 6 people – so that each person is provided with all the support and help they need during the day.
The day will be run by Maggie Smith, professional basket maker and artist. Trading Places is based within the beautiful surroundings of the Stanwick Lakes nature reserve, in the heart of Northamptonshire’s Nene Valley. All of our courses take place in and around our purpose built green oak Training Barn. Course places can be booked for one or more people depending on availability. However, if you are looking for a larger group booking (such as a work team building event, a group of friends or an alternative hen or stag 'do') we are very happy to discuss your requirements with you.
Please visit the Trading Places website to check availability and to book a place.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Tools, materials and safety equipment are provided for all courses. Participants are simply asked to bring their own supply of enthusiasm and a packed lunch! (we provide tea and coffee during the courses)
For anyone who is travelling some distance and would like to look at local accommodation, please see our website for a list (under the Directions tab). Please note that these businesses are local to the site but are not linked to Trading Places in anyway.
Jo Bird at Trading Places: Traditional Craft Courses
Absolutely brilliant course, enjoyed every minute, Maggie is a great tutor giving us a chance to explore the weaving, giving guidance when it did not go quite right. I was amazed with the basket I had made, would highly recommend this course looking forward to March to come again.
This is an absolutely brilliant course. It's the second one I've done and had the same tutor. She is patient, clear, organised and very very good. Highly recommend this course and have already planned to do another.
