About the Course

Introduction to the Art of Suminagashi

Suminagashi is the ancient Japanese art of floating inks on the surface of the water to create a monoprint. It is a beautiful serendipitous art that creates unique patterns, as the paint swishes and swirls on the bath.

We will work with various papers and inks and hand embellish in gold. The prints can be used in a number of ways from book covers, endpapers, framed original prints and gift wrapping.

It is a beautifully mindful printmaking process working with water. studies show that water and the sound of water have many health benefits and give an immeasurable sense of peace and calm. If you love working with inks and hearing the soothing sound of water, you will love this aqueous surface design printing method.
