Learn to make beautiful jewellery to give as gifts or to express your individual style!
These are relaxed and sociable sessions in our professional workshop at the beautiful Cockenzie House and Gardens with highly experienced Artist Jeweller and Community Artist, Fiona Hermse. Cockenzie House is a 17th century former Jacobean mansion house on the banks of the Firth of Forth. It is located a few miles east of Edinburgh and is easily acessible from Edinburgh city via public transport or by car. It is also easily acessible from many other parts of East Lothian.
This booking is for a block of 3 Thursday evening jewellery classes All sessions are 6.30-9.00pm. Further blocks of 3 Thursday evening classes will be available to book in the near future to continue your learning and deepen your knowledge.
Beginners and intermediate jewellers are all welcome as the course content is customisable so can be tailored to the desires of the group wherever possible.
For absolute beginners we will begin with the basics of saw piercing, continuing on to soldering and learning how to smooth and add various finishes your jewellery. You can expect to come away with at least 2 pieces of finished pieces of jewellery by the end of the course, which can be earrings, pendants, or one of each.
Further techniques taught (once the basics have been mastered) can include; ring making, doming, oxidising, using letter punches, rolling, basic keum boo, pearl stringing, making your own findings, texturising metals, how to make a simple claw setting, carving for lost wax casting, creating your own designer link chain, basic enamelling...the list goes on. We will initially be working with base metals (copper or brass) to learn the basic skills of jewellery making. These are provided as well as all tools necessary. Fairtrade silver will be available to purchase at cost price from our workshop for intermediate level learners, if desired.
There is both lift and stair access to our workshop. If you have a disability that might affect your ability to participate in the workshops, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me and we can chat things through. I will do my best to accommodate you wherever possible.
Please be aware that if the minimum number of participants is not met, the course may be cancelled by the tutor. If the course is cancelled, attendees will be notified a minimum of 24 hours in advance of the first class and given a full and prompt refund.
