About the Course
Join talented illuminator, Sarah Lace, for a one day workshop in the historic craft of Illuminated Lettering. Sarah will begin with a brief history of the subject through the centuries and demonstrate both traditional and modern techniques. Sarah will then guide you to design and create your own illuminated letter which you will decorate using the techniques shown using watercolour and gold. This workshop is suitable for beginners.
For those who are not familiar with Illuminated Lettering - the term illuminate comes from the Latin 'illuminaire' which means 'to light up' and is essentially decorative calligraphy with the use of colour and gold in many different forms. Traditionally this was a religious subject practised in the monasteries with the application of gold leaf to a letter which then reflects the light and makes the letter appear to glow. This letter would typically be the first on a manuscript page or borders and coloured images were added to enhance the letter. Nowadays these techniques can be applied to create something quite modern and appealing.
Sarah is a local artist with a background in fine art and design. In the last 3 years Sarah has begun to specialise in illumination, in particular, lettering and is mentored by experienced illuminator, Patrick Corbett. Sarah is passionate about this historic craft and passing on her skills to keep this vital craft alive. With a keen interest in history, literature and art Sarah finds this medium combines all three and her love of Lake District heritage gives her continued inspiration.

A highly enjoyable day in all respects. Sarah was a superb tutor, bringing this fascinating and ancient craft to life and inspiring me, a complete novice, with many ideas and much encouragement. All materials were provided, and attendees couldn’t ask for more. Our host and organiser Karen had thought of everything to make the day perfect. The venue is outstanding, with its purpose built studio adjacent to the beautiful Lanehead house where we enjoyed a delicious home-cooked lunch. Highly recommended, and I will definitely be returning.
