Maker's bio

The Smug Soles Co. was set up by Nia in 2017 to introduce makers to the joy of making simple sandals that fit your feet. The workshop experience is built on the idea of unique, sustainable and experimental making. Smug Soles believes sustainability should come as standard and not as an inconvenient add-on for companies and we do our best to offer the most sustainable options available, whilst still ensuring you have a great experience.

Nichy Richardson reviewed: Extended Sandal Making Workshop

"Expect a full on two days with a tutor who is knowledgeable, confident and focused. Nia’s attention to detail and desire for her students to leave with not only a great pair of sandals, but with the ability and confidence to carry on at home is great. I came away with a pair of truly bespoke, good looking, wearable shoes. I couldn’t have enjoyed myself more!"

The Smug Soles Co. responded:

"Thank you so much for your wonderful review Nichy, especially complimentary as it's coming from another leatherworker!! I'm so pleased you're happy with your sandals and enjoyed your time in the workshop. And thank you for making it an enjoyable couple of days for me too!"

Sian reviewed: Leather sandal making workshop

"I signed up myself and my Mam to one of Nia's classes to make sandals. I was looking for something interesting and unique the both of us could do together. Nia was enthusiastic, friendly, patient, and helpful. We were both very pleased with the finished sandals and would definitely recommend the course."

Shari reviewed: Leather sandal making workshop

"Brilliant course, Nia was very knowledgeable about her craft and to pass on information on how to get started at home, where to get leather supplies from, and pattern adjustment. I came home with a unique beautiful pair of sandals. Thanks again Nia!"

The Smug Soles Co. responded:

"Thank you so much for your lovely review Sharon! I shared a picture of your sandals online and they had such a great response! A really lovely and unique pair of shoes. So glad you enjoyed the workshop :)"

Claire reviewed: Leather sandal making workshop

"What a joy to make your own shoes! My friend and I signed up to one of Nia's workshops, despite no previous shoe-making experience, and we had a wonderful day. In her cosy studio above an independent shop selling work by local artists and makers, Nia took us through the process step by step. From marking out the leather and cutting the pieces, to punching holes and stitching soles, she provided all the tools and encouragement we needed. I am now the proud owner of handmade bright pink espadrilles with blue tassels. I'd love to go back and make myself a pair of hi-top sneakers!"
