Had a great time and learnt a lot. I was the only person on the weekend before Christmas, and Sebastian looked after me famously. His yard is a fascinating place and beautifully situated. Good introduction to stonecarving. Sebastian leaves you to get on with your own idea, interjecting regularly with comments and suggestions.
A very enjoyable weekend in a lovely orchard. Hard work but everyone ended up with a great sculpture. The advice Sebastian gives is spot on, customised and keeps you going in the right direction. Recommended to try even if you have not done this before.
Had a very enjoyable and productive experience on Sebastian’s 2day Stone-carving course.
He is an engaging and excellent teacher who believes in “learning by doing” and within a short time, every member of our small group was actively working on pieces of stone. This familiarised students with using the tools and the feel of the stone. Everyone then chose a piece of stone from the large selection available, personal tools, gloves and eye protection were given out - and the carving commenced. All the while, Sebastian was on hand and available for guidance, advice and encouragement. His heated rustic studio and outdoor working areas set in a small orchard made a perfect setting. Tea, coffee (and cake) breaks as well. The two days passed all too quickly, with each student taking home their project at the end.
My advice to anyone thinking of joining this course would be not to hesitate - just do it !
This was a really fun and absorbing couple of days. I've never worked in stone before, so it was fascinating to learn different ways of shaping the stone. I had decided to make an abstract shape, and unwisely hadn't made an initial model so Sebastian's suggestions helped me enormously. Highly recommended!
A great course in lovely surroundings. The tutor gave just the right amount of tuition, leaving the student to proceed with their own designs but always on hand to help and answer questions. I chose a piece of stone which was too big to finish in two days so maybe this could have been pointed out to me. Having said that, I do now have the basic skills needed to finish on my own. I would definitely recommend this course for anyone interested in stone carving.
This is a GREAT course! Sebastian's studio in the countryside was a perfect setting for 2 days of carving.
Managed to make a few small pieces over the weekend.
Highly recommended - and i'll be back for another go next year!
A fabulous weekend. The setting is enchanting, with loads of examples of stone sculptures set out in the woodland clearing to take inspiration from. I could hardly believe that from starting with a chunk of stone that it was possible to create a piece of art that I will always be proud of. Sebastian was generous with ideas and techniques to help me develop a stone sculpture that gradually evolved during the two days. Needless to say there was a fair amount of elbow grease needed but I was aware of that. It had been several years since I had done any stone sculpture, however the methods soon came back to me and I very much enjoyed participating in this workshop. Thanks to Sebastian for this lovely weekend.
A friend recommended this Stone Carving course after seeing her stone sculptures in her garden.
The course is great fun, very hands-on - in a lovely rural setting.
But the real alchemy is what you create in 2 days! Sebastian’s sculptures are there to inspire and he has a great teaching style, gently encouraging you as you see your vision transform in your hands! Lots of tea & home-made apple juice to keep you going. Thank you Sebastian for a memorable 2 days. We will be back.
I absolutely loved the stone carving course and would recommend it to anyone. Sebastian gave us just the right amount of advice and guidance and we were able to get on with it try for ourselves right from the start- I’d never done anything like it before and was delighted by what I managed to achieve. The course is located in a lovely setting and Sebastian is a really nice guy. The whole weekend was very relaxing and I felt really exhilarated by the end!
My son and I attended the course as complete beginners. Sebastian was great, provided lots of guidance and encouragement. The weekend was really relaxed and suitable for all ages. We both had a fantastic time and we are so pleased with our stonecarvings and what we managed to achieve. I would strongly recommend this course, my son wants to do it again already!
It is no wonder why this course is in the 'Platinum Award' category. I spent 2 great days with Sebastian and other lovely people who took the same course. In a pleasant and peaceful setting, you forget your problems and focus only on your own project. I guarantee that you will never understand how time will have passed by the end of the second day.
Sebastian is an easygoing and helpful person. His approach is not based on imposing a set of instructions on you, rather he listens to you, and understands what you want to achieve. He is very supportive. Whenever you need help, he is right next to you. He is also a very kind person. I am so very thankful to him.
I learned so much in these 2 days and I am definitely going to be back. If you are new to stone masonry and want to give it a go, please do not think about it, just book it!
We had an amazing weekend at the site near Cheltenham. It was wonderful to work on a sculpture in a setting like that. Beautiful wooden structures made by Sebastian with found pieces of wood and doors of other buildings. Sculpture and stone lying around in grass fields for you to explore or just to be surrounded by.
We felt very welcome and supported, Sebastian showed us the tools and helped us figure out what we wanted to do/how to do it. It was very laid back, we could work on our own ideas, but whenever there was something difficult we could ask for help or Sebastian would give advice. We both think we got quite far with our sculpture/ I think mine is even finished. You can really achieve something in two days.
Our group was small and intimate, it was a nice atmosphere. We had nice chats during lunch and coffee breaks.
I would recommend everyone who want try out sculpture/stonecarving Sebastian's course. We made some great memories.
I recommend this course to anyone who would like to extend their creativity or to those of your who feel they don't have a creative bone in their body! You will be very surprised at what you can achieve. The venue was wonderfully peaceful, set amidst open fields of sheep and cattle. This atmosphere immediately created calm and peace. Sebastian's huge knowledge, enthusiasm and excellent tuition, together with breaks for tea, coffee and biscuits made the weekend the most enjoyable I've experienced for a very long time. I shall certainly be going again. Many thanks Sebastian.
I wanted to learn more about ancient Roman stone carving methods in the Cotswolds area and what better way to do it than getting hands on and actually carving some stone in the Cotswolds!
Sebastian listened to why all attendees were there and what they hoped to get out of the course. He provided pointers and refinement tips, as well as carving technique for our ideas. He provided excellent individual and group direction to everyone and distributed confidence amongst us when it was needed.
The course is run in a fantastic and accessible location, just off the M5. Sebastian's studio is amazing (be sure to check out his hand carved sink) and set in a lovely location with cover from rain. There are tea/coffee and toilet facilities as well as parking. Sebastian has implemented covid measures well and you can hang on to your tools all weekend so that nobody else touches them.
I came away with a deeper understanding of Roman carving and now even have one of my own. Absolutely 10/10.
Wow what a brilliant two days spent in the open air with sheep grazing around us, absolute bliss.
A wonderful atmosphere to learn a new skill, stonecarving. The space was perfect for social distancing, I felt very safe with our own tools and plenty of soap and water for hand washing.
The stonecarving itself was so much better than I expected, I am not an artist, have no experience with stone, and yet came home with a fantastic sculpture. Sebastian is very good at encouraging and leads you into being confident.
Go on give it a go. It really is a great two days, I am definitely going to do another course for sure.
I’m still in the calm/content state the weekend put me in! The beautiful outdoor setting was conducive to being creative, the tuition was informative and supportive yet we were all encouraged to express ourselves in a unique manner. I nearly didn’t attend the weekend as I had a plaster cast on my broken ankle but Sebastian couldn’t have done more for me to ensure I was able to participate effectively. I had a foot rest to keep my leg elevated, very easy access to the tools I needed and he kept an eye on my progress so I didn’t need to get up to seek help. We all agreed that we would return in the future for another workshop as we felt it was good value for money and were all delighted with our creations. If you are considering doing a creative workshop I would wholeheartedly recommend you book this one, you won’t regret it.
Excellent and interesting course where you have all the support you need to get hands on and do real sandstone sculptures. Very practical and you leave the course with enough skills and confidence to keep building on what you’ve learnt when you get back home.
