As a wildlife biologist and woodland firefighter for the last decade, the best part of my job was teaching others the wonders of wild spaces. The tools and traditions of living close to nature are as wondrous as natural spaces themselves. My passion for the natural world shifted from the growth of flora and fauna to how we as humans grow in wild areas. I now focus on working with young people and adults, specialising in green woodworking, spoon carving, wilderness skills and bushcraft, with nature based well-being at the centre of all I do. I primarily teach sloyd workshops and wilderness education programmes. I have experience with SEN individuals as well as other mental and spiritual health difficulties. For me, the natural world and its materials are a source of grounding. I am an avid outdoorsman, angler, green woodworker, and new father. I strive to find creative and impactful ways to help people connect with themselves and the natural world through making.
"I booked this workshop as a surprise date for my partner and we had such a great time! Max is amazing at explaining anything wood-related and his friendly attitude and passion for wood carving made the whole workshop truly enjoyable. Starting from a block of wood, in 5/6 hours we managed to create beautiful spoons of different shapes! We loved having the opportunities to learn how to use all the tools for wood carving, from the axe to the hook knife.
I recommended this workshop already to many of my friends and I’m considering getting the tools to start wood carving in my spare time!
Thanks again Max, hopefully see you soon for another workshop! 😊"

"Max was an excellent teacher. Fantastic manner. Exceptionally knowledgeable about wood carving and all things nature. We had a very enjoyable day and ended up with some pretty good spoons. Max was cool, calm and kind throughout. We will go on another course with him and recommend the spoon carving course wholeheartedly. "

"This course was a birthday present to me from my 10 year old son and it was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday!
Max was very enthusiastic about all things wood & carving, he is a very patient teacher - sharing this passion and all the techniques so that we were both able to make some great carvings.
I recommend both the course and Max very highly!"
