Maker's bio

The Woven Briar is my weaving workshop based in the rolling hills on the edge of Exmoor. Using blade shorn fleeces from my flock and harvested or foraged plant materials, I create textiles and craft materials that are fully traceable and sustainable. I offer tuition in my workshop in Ford as well as a social spinning group in Wiveliscombe. I have a flock of rare breed sheep which I keep for their beautiful and versatile fleeces, blade shorn to improve the length of fibre and the welfare of the animal. I wash, spin and weave the wool into beautiful one of a kind pieces right here on the farm, creating 100% natural, biodegradable, sustainable pieces in tune with the seasons. I also send fleeces to a fibre mill just an hour from our fields, to be made in to sliver and yarn, suitable for felting and spinning. All of our animals are grass-fed, well cared for with the highest regard for their welfare and health.

Toby reviewed: One On One Spinning Tuition

"I thoroughly enjoyed my two days with Bec at The Woven Briar. Bec provided great insight into different types of wool and the sheep from which it is sourced. She provided clear instructions and demonstrated the methods of carding and combing, through to getting used to powering the spinning wheel so that when it came time to start spinning I needed to focus less in my feet and more on my hands. Meeting Bec’s flock of sheep was a real treat especially Vita whom loved a chin scratch. I can wholeheartedly recommend this workshop to get you started in the world of spinning your own yarn. "

The Woven Briar Ltd responded:

"Thank you so much Toby it was a pleasure to spend time spinning with you. I can't wait to see how you take it forward and develop your style. Vita says hello!"

Louise reviewed: Two day spinning on a spinning wheel with natural fibres

"Absolutely amazing. I think it's fair to say I'm not a natural but Bex is so supportive and encouraging that in the end I managed to spin some decent yarn. She is so knowledgeable too. I'm so excited to go and buy my own wheel so I can practise more. I loved meeting the sheep too!!."
