I learnt enough, and was given the confidence to venture off and explore the medium on my own - exactly what a taster day should do. "The class was very well-paced and organised with the opportunity to practice using the materials. There was a sense of accomplishment in coming out with a finished product at the end. Knowledge was delivered in a practical way. This and the great studio surroundings and seeing Derek's achievements have inspired me to take the techniques away to experiment more for myself. I would encourage anyone interested in stained glass to take the chance to meet someone who has spent many years honing the craft and who is passionate about keeping the skills alive while being open to the evolution of new techniques and applications. "

"I had such a good day on this course. Derek goes though everything step by step, gives advice and help where needed, and ensures everyone leaves with a completed piece. I had never done anything with glass before, but Derek made me feel confident in my abilities and spurred me on. The day felt like the perfect duration, not so long that you feel you could have done more. It's long enough that you aren’t too rushed at any point. There was a good selection of designs to choose from and lots of lovely colours of glass to allow us all to make striking designs. Would definitely recommend for anyone wanting to try something new and challenging. "

"Hi Derek, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed my day with you last weekend on the painted glass workshop. There was a good group of people and the atmosphere was nicely relaxed. The coffee was good too! I had done a short course previously, but never followed up on it. I think I might have found it all a bit daunting. You made it all seem a lot simpler and straightforward and the notes that you have sent are nice and clear too. I have bought some dipping pens, clove and lavender oil. Yes, I want to try working with them. I didn’t get the opportunity with you so could you clarify how to mix up the paint. You say about the oils and powder in a jar, what sort of proportion of oils to powder? Do you grind them? Do you add water? Thanks for giving me a bit of confidence to do this, and for a lovely day."

It was also my pleasure to be alongside 4 others who are clearly very talented artists, as well as being experienced in glass art, so it was even more educational for me. I am not able to justify the purchase of my own kiln but may have access to the units at my local Craft Centre. The workshop is lovely light and airy and warm bonus !! I took a design I wanted to do hoping I could do it and Derek helped me achieve it so I was over the moon. "This is the fourth course that I have attended with Derek at the beautiful Limelight Studios. I always have a fabulous time and this was no exception. This time it was a leaded glass workshop. Derek explained how to use all the tools in the studio and how to cut glass efficiently and safely. He explained everything so clearly, giving me confidence to make something I’m really proud of. I learnt so much and had a great day, made even better by a seemingly endless supply of delicious coffee and biscuits! Perfect! "

Thoroughly enjoyed the Workshop and getting a feel for the art of leading, and I really look forward to getting the few extra tools and materials I need to start a few other small projects, to gain experience and develop my skills. Just wish I had started many years ago!! I would certainly love the opportunity to be included in any additional workshops that you may hold in 2023, and shall watch out for any announcement. Sooner rather than later, eh??"

""I feel both fortunate and privileged to have been able to attend a Glass Painting Taster Day at the end of October and a Leaded Glass Taster day last week-end, both of which were superbly structured with demonstrations and tutoring. These are both vast areas of learning and I know that we only touched the surface, but the amount of knowledge relayed to us, is entirely down to Derek`s ability as a natural tutor, his patience and his own enthusiasm and love for the work that he does, a passion which he transfers to his students in an infectious manner. From the outset, Derek, Derek`s wife and Jura (their dog, who was allowed into the workshop to say hello) made us feel completely at ease and most welcome. Derek would undertake part demonstrations to a certain stage for you to follow on your own work and would assist if needed and was willing to answer all questions along the way. The next stage would then be demonstrated leading to production of the final piece of work from yourselves. Derek would explain the traditional methods which are in the main still used today. The Taster days were extremely informative and rewarding in that not only had you learnt new skills, you left with a reminder of the day, with the item that you had worked on. I would highly recommend Derek`s courses which are a fantastic experience""

"I’ve been watching Derek’s inspiring videos and tutorials for some time and when I saw that he was running a taster day I signed up immediately. I had to wait 6 months to attend as I couldn’t make the earlier dates he had available. I was so impatient! Sometimes when something that has been anticipated for such a long time it can fall down flat when it finally arrives, but this was certainly not the case here. Derek’s course was stimulating right from the word go. I have some experience with stained glass painting but felt there were holes in my knowledge base and found that to be true. The participants had a range of previous knowledge starting from zero but everyone had the chance to learn. There was lots of time to chat as well as paint and I got the opportunity to pick Derek’s brain about all sorts of questions I had. I also tried out new techniques that I hadn’t tried before. Derek was so generous with his time and knowledge – it’s fantastic to be taught by an expert. Derek’s studio is an absolute gem in a beautiful village setting, he and his wife were very welcoming and when I got lost on my way there, making me late, went out of their way to put me at my ease. I had the most amazing day, learning, experimenting, being with like minded people. I can’t wait to go there again."
