Excellent course. Parking available, toilet available. Premises totally suited to the workshop. Fantastic views. Patient, quality teaching, guiding rather than instructing allowing participants to follow their own direction. Copious quantities of tea and coffee along with biscuits. And then there was the copper bashing. I do love bashing metal. I have been having a go at various silversmithing and copper courses; I am not that good and my results not very predictable - although on occasion I have made some beautiful pieces of which I am very proud. But I think it's fair to say I feel vaguely nervous around the equipment and much angst in the studios I have worked in previously. I think what I liked best about David's course was that I felt relaxed in the workshop and very comfortable around the equipment. I hope to return.
This course was booked as a birthday present for me and my best friend by my husband and we had the most amazing time.
The workshop is on top of a hill with gorgeous countryside and in the summer this will be the most glorious setting. Sadly on the day we were there it was pouring down and blowing a gale but the barn was still warm and inviting. We were welcomed, given tea and biscuits and allowed to progress with the course at our own pace. Tuition was clear and helpful without being over bearing or too simple. David was friendly, knowledgeable and a wonderful tutor. It as also great to see other examples of the different types of work he does and has done in the past. All in all I cannot recommend highly enough. I am delighted with the ring I produced and wear it most days! Looking forward to being able to book up for the copper fold forming workshop in the future.
Thank you for the lovely feedback. I am delighted you enjoyed the experience so much and look forward to you booking on the Copper fold-forming workshop in the future. Do remember to contact me directly to get your discount for that.
The day was a Christmas gift from my partner as I expressed interest in learning more about glass cutting and it was for beginners as a taster course. I had no previous experience in cutting glass, and it took a while to get the hang of it. David was quite short with me, in front of the rest of the class, on more than one occasion.
Although I realize he is passionate about his craft, and very talented,I found his attitude really rude and quite embarrassing.
I am sorry that you did not enjoy your day learning to make your stained glass panel. Yes, you struggled in the beginning as do many others, but by keeping it light-hearted and me showing you different methods of using different cutting tools you overcame the problems you were experiencing and you acheived your goal, which you told me was to make a stained glass panel - and it was lovely. Also you were the first to finish.
I was not aware that I was treating you differently from anyone else, so I am sorry you did not enjoy the day.
An excellent morning and wonderful to leave with a piece of jewellery I can wear. I have attended David's stained glass course in the past, and as before David was an excellent teacher. He takes you through each stage of the process and is incredibly patient. All the tools and equipment you could possibly need were to hand. A lovely small group and each person made their own individual design. Looking forward to the next course!
What a brilliant course. I didn't believe for a second that I would be able to go from absolutely no experience to making a silver ring in 3 hours, but I did and loved what I produced! David is an excellent teacher - very patient and attentive, funny and engaging. More to the point, he really helps you to believe that you are capable of producing something beautiful no matter what your level of competence is and he clearly has the technical know-how to back this up. Also, the group of participants on my course really made the experience - everyone was really friendly and we really bonded under David's expert tuition and super, approachable manner.
An excellent course and I would happily do this course again, or even better, do a day long course. It really was that good.
Thanks Krish for that lovely review. You made an amazing (and advanced for a complete beginner) ring and it was great to see you surprise yourself. I look forward to seeing you on one of the full day courses that will be running later in 2020.
Such an enjoyable morning and so surprising what you can create and make in a morning. David is an excellent teacher and makes the whole process enjoyable, light and fun. I’d never made any jewellery before and it was fascinating to see what goes into it, I felt a wonderful sense of achievement at the end. The workshop space is so well equipped and laid out and the course just flows beautifully. It’s a gorgeous peaceful location in the Sussex Downs, the views are stunning. Highly recommend.
David was a great instructor and clearly passionate about stained glass works and sharing his enthusiasm with others. David gave clear instructions and demonstrations and very patiently repeated and re-demonstrated when requested. An extremely enjoyable and thoroughly productive, stimulating and motivating day which I would definitely recommend to others. I'd like to come back and do more.
David is an excellent teacher. Clear, supportive and enthusiastic. It's incredible what wonderful organic shapes you can be producing within a very short time. Great fun, super technique, highly recommended.
Loved it, Loved it, Loved it.
There were only 2 of us on this course so we had lots of individual attention. We started the day with David showing us different techniques and how to use the different tools then he let us "play" for a bit before we decided what we wanted to create.
His endless patience in showing me how to do things was very helpful. I finished the day with a whole set of leaves and a flower along with lots of copper to complete my mobile at home. I'm very much looking forward to completing it and have it in my lounge.
I loved the fact that every item I made/created was totally unique and individual , it's almost as if they were waiting to be discovered within the sheet of copper.
Thanks for your great review. There were in fact only six people on the course and I'd really like to know what you felt you were waiting to use as each participant had their own set of main tools, it was only the specialist tools and single forge that there was limited numbers of. If you can help me improve the experience I'd like to know how.
