I booked the candle making course as a birthday surprise and was not disappointed. Julie is a welcoming friendly host who puts you at ease right from the word go. We made some lovely candles and melts and learnt a lot thanks to Julie's extensive knowledge. We also left rather full due to lovely afternoon tea provided.
Thanks Julie for a lovely day. Perfect!
Had such a lovely day with Julie. There were 5 of us in the group and we were all made to feel very welcome with a cup of tea/coffee on arrival.
The location was easy to find, parking was easy to locate and the cottage itself was a charm.
We all had our own space where all the equipment and our first set of "creative" ingredients were laid out ready. To begin with we were made a soap load using the liquid soap method. Julie went into great detail, explaining the different methods of soap making before we moved onto creating our own soap scented with uplifting grapefruit. There were various colours to chose from, all natural, and lots of different embeds and embellishments to choose from. I went for poppy seeds and calendula. I was very pleased with the final result, which cut into 5 bars of soap.
From there we went on to make a lip balm, body scrub, body butter, bath bomb and bath salts.
Julie provided all the pots and labels needed and we were handed instructions on each to take away with us.
The lunch we had was wonderful. It was a shame that Covid prevented the "afternoon tea", but they picnic hamper style box we each had was lovely, with sandwiches, cake, fruits, and a pastry along with a mug of tea.
All in all a fabulous day. I would definitely recommend and will certainly be looking to take part in some of the other courses run by Julie.
I had a lovely day, Julie does a fantastic job, she makes you feel at ease, very helpful. They made a really nice lunch, and we took home lots of goodies that we had made. I would recommend to family and friends, well worth the money!
First of all the cottage is in the most idyllic location, which just sets the tone for the day. Jules was extremely welcoming and even under the strange new normal of covid related restrictions, we felt extremely safe and comfortable in the workshop room. I am looking to start selling candles in the future and so was hoping to learn everything I needed to know to give me the confidence to start - and Julie did not disappoint! She shared all of the essentials, but also so many extra hints and tips for the perfect candle - even how to keep spend per candle to a minimum for maximum profitability and which suppliers to use for what! Myself and my step mum had such a fun day and it definitely gave me the confidence to come home and continue building on the skills I had learnt. Thanks so much and we will be back again I'm sure!
Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Julie was patience personified and we all came away with a bagful of splendid soaps. The natural oils and essences gave the finished product an uplifting perfume not like the mass manufactured soaps which are often overloaded. Lovely afternoon tea and a quirky venue with lots of other goodies to buy.
Having attended Julies “melt and pour” course earlier this year I was keen to continue my soap making experience.
Initially apprehensive about the face masks, protective goggles and gloves, Julie soon put us all at ease with school level chemistry. Julie explained each stage of the cold process eloquently and answered every question - even the most basic 🤦♀️. Before lunch we had already made one batch of soap, adding fragrance and colour.
Lunch was styled like afternoon tea which was absolutely delicious and plentiful.
Afterwards we made another batch of soap - more confident now with our new found experience we could easily experiment with colours, scents and additives such as poppy seeds for exfoliating.
Some people were there for the experience and others there like myself trying to make it into a second income stream. Julie gave me lots of labelling and legal advise without hesitation.
I highly recommend this and other courses.
I attended the cold process soap course (March 2020) and it was great. Once we'd got over the unfounded fear of chemistry we had a creative afternoon making up a couple of batches of soap. The pace of the course was good- relaxed but no time wasted. I enjoyed the midday break for afternoon tea, lovely. All in all a very pleasant way to spend 4 hours. Julie's teaching was excellent and she imparted so much knowledge I now feel confident enough to have a go at home. We shared out the soaps made by us, so all ended up with about 9 bars each to take home.
Loved my time doing the candle making course here - Julie and Janet really looked after us and it was interesting as well as fun. So happy with all my creations I got to take home with me, and they all smell incredible. The lunch spread was also brilliant, so make sure you go hungry!
A brilliant course, and also the shop was lovely - make sure you have a look around for some things to buy too. Thanks so much ladies x
I did this course with my mum and sisters recently and we all thoroughly enjoyed the whole day. Jules is a natural at teaching, the atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly and all four of us were really pleased with the products we made and took home. The icing on the cake was the afternoon tea which was delicious! It's the second course we have done with Jules and Jan and we can thoroughly recommend it - a great day out!
Response from Crafters Cottage Holmfirth:Thank you so much Jackie for your lovely review and so glad you all enjoyed the course you were a fabulous family group who were a pleasure to have at Crafters Cottage xx
I really enjoyed this course. The setting was really lovely, great welcome and fun and productive day. Julie is so knowledgeable about her subject, and patient and generous and funny too. Recommended to anyone from those who want to set up a candle making business to those who want to dabble and have a go.
A great introduction into making soaps, bath salts and body butters. I left the course with products I had made and was inspired to learn more about making my own soaps, bath salts and body butters at home. As a result, my friends and family all received 'zero plastic' hand made toiletries this Xmas. Also, lunch was fabulous, thank you.
Such a cute little venue. Arrived to teas and coffees and a table laid out so beautifully ready for our afternoon tea later.
The group was great, Julie and Janet got us all settled in and we were all chatting together in no time. Plenty of time was given for making each product and Julie was friendly, knowledgeable and happy to take questions. Everything was easy enough to make - no prior skills needed, just an interest. We all made one of everything so could pick out own scents/colours for each product. I came home with loads of new knowledge and a surprisingly large amount of each product (would have cost me a fortune for similar in a certain natural high street cosmetics store)!
The afternoon tea was divine, our requests were catered for. Every detail had been thought of, everything ran smoothly and it was a brilliant day.
The cost felt a bit of a stretch for my budget, but I really wanted to do it, so i went for it. So glad i did! When you add up the skills learnt to make future products, the afternoon tea, the fun had and the cost of the products you come away with - worth every penny and then some! Excellent value, excellent time had and i can't wait for my ingredients to arrive so i can start playing (oops I mean making) at home. I would be delighted to recommend this to anyone & everyone! Thank you!
Absolutely amazing was made to feel very welcome. learnt amazing skills plus the hr food was delightful whcih was a bonus!
From walking through the door. I knew we we going to have a great day. Julie is so knowledgeable, funny and very welcoming. I had already been making candles, but the information given and the ideas were very useful. The afternoon tea was delicious. The people who we met on the day made it a brilliant day. I will definitely be booking on some more courses.
I had a great day. I have wanted to make cold process soap for a while, but found the thought of using lye a little scary. Julie walked us through each step and given me the confidence to try it at home. There were so many oils and fragrances to try, as well as colours and botanicals, we were spoilt for choice. I've already made 3 batches of soap since getting home.
Well done crafters cottage team, what a excellent day, from the greeting at 10.30 to the farewells at 16.00, the day whizzed past. We made so many products, all carefully explained and individual help and assistance where needed, we all came away with professional looking bathing products.
Julie followed up the day with the relevant paperwork and recipes, a better idea than handing them out on the day.
I will certainly book some of the other courses on offer, at this amazing, quintessentially English venue, with its lovely afternoon tea.
I really enjoyed this soap making course. Looking forward to doing some more courses with Julie. Thanks to Julie and Janet for yummy lunch. Julie you’re really good host and tutor gave lots of information during course. Explained all the steps so clearly and lots of options for ingredients. Thank you
Hi Julie, a big thank you from myself and daughters Jackie and Liz who had the pleasure of joining your candle making course on July 20th. Your welcome was so warm and friendly, putting everyone at ease, felt I had known you for ages! The thought, details, and little extras that Julie puts into it all is outstanding. Special thanks to Janet also for fabulous lunch, Betty's teashop better watch out !! And not forgetting Julie's husband for lift to the station. Many thanks. 10/10
I attended this course with my mum and sister and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Jools was an excellent teacher - she is friendly, funny and approachable. We learnt how to make several different candles and we took everything we had made home in lovely packaging. The afternoon tea was wonderful - there was lots of it and it was delicious - thank you Janet! I cannot recommend this course enough - it was a lovely day out and we are all keen to book another course. Thanks also to Ian who very kindly took us the train station at the end of a superb day!
Can I just say I've enjoyed my first candle making experience so much, an absolutely fantastic venue and first class hospitality. But wouldn't expect anything less from Julie and Janet who have a lovely Yorkshire welcome. On the course today we had a giggle and thoroughly great time. Would recommend this course to anyone who is looking to have a great day out and learning the skill of how to make candles. Fantastic value for money .
Can't thank Julie and Janet enough , I'll be back on another one of your courses in the very near future x
p.s The lunch was very nice too.
