"Totally recommend this course to anyone with an interest in green woodworking. Aside from the best setting to work in you can imagine and the great tutors, the course managed to to cram in teaching a good number of principles and techniques in a comparatively short time. I chose to make a shave-horse and learned how to split large logs, shape with an axe, drill with an auger, carve joints of various shapes and even fitted in some pole-lathe work! An awesome few days that now has me back at home, running around antique shops for restorable tools and eyeing up my local patch of woodland..."

Jeremy Smith reviewed: Introduction to coppicing

"Attended this course in October 2018, run by a super bunch of very knowledgeable and enthusiastic tutors. Spent a few hours learning the theory and biology of the trees, but mostly worked outside learning to use a range of hand tools ( and learnt how to sharpen them too). Course has a nice pace to it, not too intense, but covers a lot of ground and the team are always happy to discuss points and expand on ideas. Recommend this to anyone who wants a few days in the fresh air being mildly active, as well as those like me who have purchased their own wood and want to gain some practical skills."

"An excellent course, highly recommended for all those interested in green wood working. I managed to make a wide variety of objects (a stool, potato mashers, a rolling pin, several spoons and half a bowl) over the four days and was ablely supported and enthused throughout by Nick, Dave and Claire. I made good use of the wide variety of pole lathes, shave horses and other devices throughout and had a vast array of tools to experiment with. To say I learned a great deal is an understatement. I partook in this as part of the 6 month woodland skills course also offered by Coppicewood College. If you're looking to gain experience in the whole range of coppicing skills and related crafts then I don't think there's a better course than this!"

"This course was absolutely brilliant - in fact, it was nothing short of life changing, and this isn't hyperbole! I had quite high expectations as I knew of some people who had been to the college before and had spoken highly of it, and I wasn't disappointed. The tutors are all highly skilled, knowledgeable and extremely lovely. The pace of the course was wonderful, the setting idyllic. It is a perfect course for starting out on the road to green woodworking. Don't dally, if you want to get into this craft you couldn't do better than study at Coppicewood College. Highly recommended."

"I came to the green woodworking course through the 6 month Coppicing course. My green woodwork project was tool handles. I had an old handle-less Yorkshire Billhook that I wanted to create a new handle for and an old handle-less drawknife too. These two combined, needed, cleaving work, Axe work, working with a Spokeshave, using a Pole Lathe and creating my own rivets to rivet the Yorkie handle on. All very useful skills and all a lot of fun to do. The instructors are wonderful people who have great passion for everything they teach and their enthusiasm spread to each and every one of us. They make you feel well looked after, well taught and I would recommend this course to anyone who enjoys being in woods and working with wood, and to anyone who thinks they might like it, you will!"

"Had a brilliant time. Lovely surroundings, excellent teaching, nice group to share the experience with. I now feel confident to do simple things at home on my own despite being an absolute beginner."

"Undertook this greenwood working course as part of Coppicewood's 6 month woodland management course. Both courses were excellent. The green woodwork course was taught by three skilled and passionate instructors who helped us to get grips with a variety of skills from pole lathing to axe work. The 6 month woodland management course is a life changer. Check it out."

"Had a really good experience. I made my very own shave horse to take home. I used Douglas Fir for the bench, Ash for the legs (3) and Willow and Ash for the vice. Chosen from the wood lying on the ground in the coppiced woodland acre just down the path. Personal instruction was at a pace that suites you. I used all the tools and aids provided and was amongst very good company. It was quite cool but only really rained on the last day, but it did not matter as you keep very warm working the wood and you can be under cover when necassary. I loved the smell of the bark and the wood and the different colours, textures and grain of the chosen pieces. Apart from the muddy ground you were working in a very clean wholesome medium. It was 'good for the soul.' I would like to make a pole lathe someday but can have a good go at a number of projects at home now on the smallholding - once I get some basic tools sorted. Thankyou Coppice College and all the tutors for a most worthwhile course. I now feel empowered!"
