About Art Of Fire Crafts School of Blacksmithing & Bladesmithing

Paddy & Graham have between them 30 years' experience of blacksmithing and bladesmithing. We run courses in sword making, blacksmith tools, hammers, welding and fabrication. On the sword and hammer making courses the student has the use of 2 air hammers, 2 hydraulic presses and a flypress. All modern tools are also used to make the courses easier for students such as grinders.

This course runs Monday to Friday from 9am until 5pm. This course can be run as a one to one or for a small group of three people. On this course you will spend two days forging a knife and will be working with 1075 steel. On the first day between 10 am and 2pm approx you will be forging the knife. Mokume Gane is a Japanese metalsmithing technique, where several alternating layers of metal are fused or soldered together before manipulating by hand to reveal complex patterns, similar to that of wood grain. This Silver Mokume Gane pattern sheet features a single top layer of copper pattern, recreating the complex flowing patterns found in Mokume Gane. To make the blacksmith knife you will heat a piece of 1055 steel in the gas/coal forge. Shape it with a hammer and anvil as well as drawing out the metal for the handle. The blade is tempered beforehand so that it is easier to work with. You will learn to bevel the knife edge and use a grinder, heat treat it in the forge and quench it.
