About the Course

Weekly creative embroidery classes on Wednesday mornings from 10am - 12 noon during term time. Run by Sheffield based textile artist Dawn Ireland who is a practicing artist with over 20 years experience working in textiles and embroidery.

The classes are relaxed & informal, where you can experiment with hand and/or free-machine embroidery, and gain lots of ideas and inspiration. They are suitable for anyone, from those who would like to have a go at embroidery but are maybe not sure where to begin, to experienced sewers.

You can bring your own project to work on or come along and discuss ideas with me during the session; or look at the wide range of samples at the class for ideas. Everyone will work at their own pace.

The barn is a beautiful grade two listed heritage, arts & natural history centre with a lovely on-site cafe. We are based in the courtyard room on the ground floor which is warm, light and overlooks the courtyard & cafe. There is disabled access & toilets close by. Free parking is available in the Sainsbury’s car park through the nature garden at the rear of the barn.

The cost is £20 per session. You can come for a one off session or book specific dates during the half term. If you pay for a half term block you will receive a £10 discount. A half term is usually from 5-8 weeks.

I have over twenty years of experience working as a textile artist and will be offering lots of support, information and ideas to help you with an existing project or something new. I can also help you to get the most out of your machine and set up for free-machine embroidery.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

All materials will be provided including a wide range of fabrics, threads (cotton, metallic, variegated) hand embroidery threads, beads, buttons, ribbons, trims, hoops, needles etc.

There will be a wide selection of samples, images, books, embroidery and creative textile magazines to look at for ideas and inspiration.

Juice & biscuits provided. There is an on site cafe where your are able to purchase a hot drink or you are very welcome to bring along a flask.

There are plenty of plug sockets for anyone wanting to bring their own sewing machine for free-machine embroidery. I will also have spare sewing machines to use.

Want to review this course?

I always look forward to the two hours on Wednesday morning spent with Dawn and her happy class of sewers at the Dronfield Hall Barn. It’s great to have someone so talented sharing their expertise so freely, and inspiring the class with the materials and techniques she introduces each week.

Dawn is a very kind and generous teacher, who always has words of encouragement. When I started the class just weeks ago, I hadn't sewn for about 15 years. Thanks to Dawn, I’ve gained the confidence to tackle all types of adventurous projects. And Dawn’s stimulating help each Wednesday spurs me on.

Dawn's teaching, coupled with the large range of materials she provides make this class excellent value for money.

Response from Dawn Ireland Textile Artist:

Thank you Carole for a really lovely review.

I have been attending Dawn's classes for around a term now, and enjoy them so much. I find it a lovely way to relax and forget about my problems whilst learning new techniques.

Dawn tends to start the class with a short demonstration each week, which you can either use as inspiration for your project that week, or you can do something completely different, or bring a project from home.

Dawn is on hand throughout to offer advice and guidance, suggestions on fabric, to help with threading your machine, or whatever you need.

I find the classes so inspiring - it is wonderful to see what everyone else is working on that week, and quite often I come home just wanting to start sewing as soon as I get in. I am now building up a collection of pieces I have made, which I am framing and will put on the walls.
