Description

Have you ever wanted a pair of soft leather gloves that fitted your hands in your favourite colour? There is nothing quite like experiencing the feel of a pair of bespoke gloves on your hands, knowing that you made them. Do you want to learn the techniques to then make them for someone else and see their reaction as they put the gloves on? Well, read on. Fancy learning all this in a beautiful rural location with lovely home-cooked food to get you through the day, and you get to meet fellow enthusiasts? This is a three consecutive day course to show you the techniques of drafting a glove pattern to fit your hands and constructing an unlined pair of gloves. We will look at the following areas: Gloving leathers - types, styles and suppliers. Glove anatomy and pattern pieces. Linings - will be discussed, though the gloves on this course are unlined. How to measure your hands. Drafting and adapting your pattern. Transferring the design to leather and cutting out your pattern pieces. Hand sewing techniques. The gloves will be hand stitched and you will be able to sample the stitches beforehand to see which one you prefer. Construction techniques - how to put everything together without the fingers stretching or twisting. Adding points and adapting your pattern. Adding decoration - how and when to add decoration (we won’t have time on the course). You will also receive a set of course notes. We will cover all areas of construction so you know how to assemble and finish the gloves at home. Depending on your stitching speed you may find you don’t complete everything in class. The course is aimed at beginners. We will be drafting a pattern to fit your hands. You will leave with the knowledge of how to sew and finish your gloves, equipped to make more in future. Please note we may not have enough time to finish both gloves in the three days - you will have stitched nearly everything for one hand that you will repeat for the second hand. Elizabeth will supply the leather and equipment for the day. This is included in the price of the course. We will be using lamb nappa for your gloves. Elizabeth will contact you after your purchase to ensure she knows what you hope to gain from the day. The timetable for the three days looks a bit like this 9.15am Arrival, introductions and refreshments 9.30am Class starts - First sewing session 11am Coffee break tea and homemade biscuits where possible (we have to keep your energy levels up). 11.15am Second sewing session 1pm Lunch - seasonal buffet e.g. a choice of smoked salmon & hams/charcuterie and salads (no iceberg in sight) 1.30pm Third sewing session 3.30pm Afternoon tea with cake 3.45pm Fourth and final sewing session of the day and finishing 5pm Finish and farewell All refreshments are included in the course fee. You will need to have a few breaks during the day and to stand up and move about. The timing and length of the breaks can be tweaked so we can carry on stitching. Please note the suggested menu may change slightly depending on availability, allergies and dietary preferences. Please let Elizabeth know when she contacts you after purchase. Do you need to bring anything? Just bring yourself. If you have a basic sewing kit - thimbles and scissors then it would be useful to bring that as well. I would advise keeping your sewing scissors for snipping thread. The thimble needs to sit securely on the finger you use to push the needle through the leather, to protect your finger. Please make sure you have read the terms and conditions prior to booking your course. How do I book a place? Simply place the number of places you wish to purchase into your basket and checkout securely and safely. You will then receive your booking confirmation and course details after your payment has been processed. The course takes place in the village of Kingsey, (postcode HP17 8LY) in Buckinghamshire, UK. Elizabeth will be in touch shortly after your booking is confirmed to find out if there is anything in particular you would like to cover and confirm that you have all the course details. If you have any questions about the course please contact Elizabeth via the 'message the tutor' button.

I am a teacher, maker and designer. I started my working life as a mental health nurse and I changed career in the early naughties. I graduated from the Royal School of Needlework in 2006 having learnt to stitch anything with expertise. I started working with leather in 2010 which opened up a whole new discipline for me. I love the challenges of creating bespoke pieces for people. Sharing my knowledge and skills is a passion of mine. You can learn anything if tea and cake are involved!
