Workshops are for beginners, (and post beginners!) and start at 10am and finish around 5.30 to 6pm. Held at home, in my attic studio, Temple is a small village, just 15 miles south of Edinburgh.
Everything you will need is supplied, and the price also includes Lunch and Refreshments throughout the day. You will take home your finished piece and may even purchase a Frame to make it extra special.
Tapestry weaving is a traditional hand craft, conducted on a wooden frame and used to make pictures, wall hangings and cushion covers. The picture is made using a stretcher frame, wrapping cotton warp around it, and weaving the wool, cotton, linen, or anything else, in and out - and, of course, there are numerous tips and techniques that will be taught on this course!
Beginners are welcomed, as are those who would simply like to extend their knowledge with an experienced tutor (and enjoy the friendly group atmosphere!)
Often the course days are themed, focusing on a particular subject, such as ‘faces’, ‘landscapes’, 'cottage garden', 'seascapes'. You can bring along an image of your own, or choose something different, if you prefer. There are plenty of be books, magazines and postcards to inspire you!
Courses run on specific dates, usually a Saturday, but please feel free to suggest other dates, on weekdays or at weekends. Group Bookings (4 to 6 people) are welcomed. Please email or ring Jane to discuss.
Students often come on courses again and again - be warned they can be addictive! However, there will be plenty of tutor time as there are never more than 6 students in any one class, and everyone has their own loom and all necessary equipment.
Jane attended Edinburgh College of Art, and studied Tapestry. What's included in the price?

We start at 10am ( with Coffee and a chat) and finish at 5.30 to 6pm, with Tea, cakes and more chat!

A happy return to Jane's tapestry weaving course! Another great day learning to tapestry weave with Jane where the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. A fab location in an inspirational setting. Great company creating just the right atmosphere with the day going all too quickly. I would recommend this course to anyone interested in learning a new craft skill.
Weaving skills required are demonstrated to the group and on an individual basis as needed with all possible resources available for use. I completed my seascape which I am very pleased with. Wonderful lunch and refreshments provided. Looking forward to my next tapestry weaving course with Jane and am in the process of getting my equipment to weave home.
I had a thoroughly enjoyable day last Saturday at Jane's Tapestry Weaving Course. The attic of her home is a huge, well lit workroom, eclectic and visually stimulating especially with the variety of coloured wool she had arranged for us. The equipment was well set up, the teaching relaxed and not didactic, everyone worked at their own pace and received individual tuition and encouragement. We each finished a small picture, an amazing achievement. Thanks for both the workshop and both the home baking and wonderful lunch!
Myself and 4 art friends were on holiday from the USA and wanted to participate in some sort of art experience, Jane did not disappoint. Her class, her teaching, her hospitality, her studio and the scenery were top notch! We even saw a double rainbow from her studio.
I can't praise this workshop enough! Everything was perfect. The welcome was warm, the workspace comfortable, intimate, creative and inspiring, the views to die for, the lunch and refreshments delicious, the tutoring skilled, patient and hugely encouraging.
Jane has an amazing workspace in the beautiful Midlothian countryside with the largest array of wools I've ever seen in every colour imaginable. Our workstations were set up ready with everything we might need close at hand. Refreshments flowed throughout the day and were served by Jane's husband, Graham.
We had the most fabulous and memorable day there and looking forward to booking another in the near future.
Great day with Jane, she is a wonderfully warm and patient tutor and a generous host. The group was small and friendly and this meant Jane was able to spend time with each of us. The whole day was great fun and I managed to complete a tapestry face that I was really pleased with. Came away with an instruction booklet so I can try more at home. Thanks Jane for lovely time, great cakes, lunch and wine.
We had a wonderful day with Jane yesterday. It started by her collecting us from the station (we travelled up from the south coast) and we were catered for beautifully... lovely cakes, Jane. And after much patient encouragement I managed to produce a funky face... something I would never have thought I could have achieved. Would be very happy to spend another day weaving with Jane. xx
This was my first ever workshop and I'm so glad I signed up! After my first booking was cancelled earlier in the year, I was eager not to miss this one! I thoroughly enjoyed the whole day, from being greeted warmly at the door to leaving a few hours later with my tapestry tucked under my arm! Jane is a great teacher and has lots of suggestions on the various types of weave. She has a bundle of patience and chats along with you while you work! Her attic space creates a great environment for creativity! Thank you Jane (and Graham!)
The course exceeded my expectations! Jane is a wonderful teacher who is massively attentive, encouraging everyone, whatever their level of experience or inexperience, in a gentle and fun way. She ensured that we all came away with a completed project- not easy to do and it felt really rewarding . Her studio is an amazing space full of glorious materials to choose from and books to browse. And she sustained us with really tasty food which her husband served very graciously. Great day out with friends or on your own. I’ll be back!
I had such a great time at Jane's tapestry weaving workshop yesterday. I was delighted to learn do much and to be able to complete my first piece of weaving. Instructions were clear, the studio space was gorgeous, food and drink of the highest quality and a relaxed and supportive group of people to learn with. Thanks so much for a fabulous day!!
The fact I successfully finished my first tapestry ever is a testament to Jane's teaching and experience in getting beginners motivated, started and completing a small work of art I will actually hang up! The whole day was great, including the delicious lunch and the company of the other students. I feel confident enough to try this on my own now and see where my new skills will take me. Thanks Jane!
Thoroughly enjoyable day - great welcome and good company, relaxed setting with enthusiastic support and instruction from Jane. Was alittle nervous but soon was put at my ease and got on creating my first tapestry by weaving. Great lunch and refreshments. The time flew and I managed to finish my tapestry. Good individual advice and encouragement from Jane. Would thoroughly recommend this course to everyone and I will definitely be going again. Thank you for a great learning experience!
I arrived to a warm welcome from Bob Jane's husband. We all were introduced to each other & then sat down at our places & told about to do tapestry. Even when I got stuck Jane was there with encouragement when I made a mistake. I was amazed when I finished my seascape to be able to put it a frame & to take it home with me !
I booked this class for my girlfriend as a present.
It could not have gone better. Jane was incredibly welcoming into her lovely home. The class was very well paced. We had a mix of crafty people and total beginners but at no point was anyone struggling.
It can be quite hard! You have to concentrate for a long time but Jane is very encouraging and there is a break for a very nice lunch.
This makes an excellent gift for someone who is interested in arts and crafts.
What a truly lovely day. Great teaching, brilliant materials , delicious lunch and an incredible welcome by Jane.
As someone who attends lots of classes, Jane's class is wonderful in every way. Her enthusiasm for her subject is contagious and everyone left with lovely pieces of art. A very special day. Don't hesitate to go.
I came to Jane's class as a complete beginner and feeling very nervous because I feel I'm devoid of artistic tendencies. However Jane gave such straightforward instruction and demonstration that I was soon at my ease. Any problems and Jane was quickly at my side with suggestions and even praise! Although the class was full (six students) Jane had time time for individual attention.
We'd started the morning with hot drinks and homemade biscuits and cake. Lunch was soup quiche, salad wine and a further choice of delicious cakes. Even if I'd completely failed at the weaving the foodie trip made my day!
The sense of achievement of departing at the end of the day with a framed work of art to hang on the wall and show off to family and friends was a wonderful feeling. I will be recommending Jane's course to friends!
I attended one of Jane's workshops last Saturday, and had such a lovely day. I'd been to one last year, so I knew it would be a very enjoyable day, and I wasn't disappointed! The theme was My Home - but there were lots of other options to choose from too. Jane had prepared detailed instructions and drawings to help us with our weaving. and she also demonstrated some of the techniques we'd be using too, which was very helpful. Throughout the day, Jane was always on hand to help or advise and to give us words of encouragement. By the end of the day, we had all finished our woven picture and Jane showed us how to finish off and mount our weavings ready for framing. The frames were available to purchase too. Jane is such an enthusiastic, friendly person and her workshops are.really good value with all equipment, yarn, refreshments and lunch included in the price.
Jane is a wonderful enthusiastic teacher and makes you feels very welcome in her fabulous studio. She provides everything you need from materials, to encouragement, to lovely food (with the help of her charming husband Graham). The pace of the workshop is very good and I was able to learn so much. You can also leave with a finished piece which gives you a great sense of achievement. Time runs fast and before you know it, it is time to go home...highly recommend it!
Jane' s course was a great introduction to tapestry weaving, & a thoroughly enjoyable day. She provided all of the equipment , a beautiful selection of yarns, & a very useful workbook. She's a skilled & patient teacher ,able to pitch her instructions & advice at just the right level for each member of the group. It was very satisfying to look at our completed tapestries at the end of the day. They were all individual interpretations thanks to Jane's encouragement.
Jane travelled all the way down to Stoke-on-Trent to do a workshop with a small group of ladies. We booked a hall and Jane agreed to do the travelling. On the course was a lady who had never done any weaving to other people who had done different amounts. We all completed our very individual pieces even though we started from the same template. My sister in law was a little worried that she was going to be the class duffer as very new to weaving. This was never the case even though she didn't know some of the things been spoken about. The course was set at all levels and we all worked at our own speed. An excellent course and I would love to go up to Scotland to do further workshops with Jane. Lovely choice of materials a trully fab day.
Really enjoyed Jane's landscape tapestry course on Wednesday. I had never done any weaving before and Jane instructions were so clear and she made sure everyone had help as and when they needed it. She also provided a very clear instruction booklet and I can't wait to have another go. The day was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed playing - I tend to want to get ahead of myself but Jane was very patient and encouraging and I was very pleased with the piece of tapestry I took home. Jane's studio is so warm and inviting with beautiful views. Food wonderful - Graham very kindly adapted the lunch to suit my dietary needs.

I would highly recommend this course, Jane was a wonderful teacher, incredibly patient as I was a complete beginner. We had a wonderful lunch and refreshments and the small class size gave us an opportunity to get to know the other people on the course. I will definitely be booking another course.
Jane is so enthusiastic, takes time to explain all the techniques both to the whole class and then individually. She has the imagination and flexibility to help beginners, such as myself to adapt as they go along. The class was a wonderful experience, leaving me feeling more creative than I every have. Many thanks have to go to Jane for her knowledge, experience and great teaching techniques. The warm welcome for all, with cakes and coffee allowing the participants to have a chat and get to know each other first, delicious lunch provided by Graham, afternoon tea kept us all refreshed throughout the day. And of course the wonderful studio, with views to the open countryside when a stretch was needed was inspiration too! Highly recommended.
This was a great one day course. Jane was very welcoming and an excellent teacher who encouraged us all the way through. We were provided with a tasty lunch and plenty of tea/coffee and cakes. It was good to come out with a framed tapestry and a sense of achievement. I feel Jane has given me the skills to attempt this at home but I enjoyed the course so much that I am hoping to get one for my Christmas again this year!
I attended Jane's workshop yesterday. The theme was 'Sheep'. Right from the start Jane was welcoming and friendly. We were given a workbook which contained lots of useful information, including a drawn design of a sheep and detailed instructions of all the techniques needed to weave it. Throughout the day Jane gave helpful demonstrations of each technique, but she also gave individual guidance, encouragement, and suggestions to each of her students, too. A lovely lunch was served, prepared by Jane's husband Graham. (Graham also very kindly picked me up from the bus stop in the morning too to take me to the studio). Jane showed us how to finish off our woven picture and prepare it for framing. Altogether I found this a wonderful, very informative, very enjoyable day, and very well worth the journey from Liverpool to attend! It was so satisfying to come away having produced an actual picture (rather than just a sampler). Jane is an excellent teacher and a lovely, friendly person. I will certainly be back again!
I would recommend these workshops to anyone whether they think they are creative or not. Good help, stimulating company and delicious food. I had done some weaving before but this boosted my confidence so I will broaden my horizons
I had a lovely relaxing day in picturesque surroundings doing something I enjoy with likeminded people, perfect. Jane was on hand to offer encouragement and suggest different ways to approach my weaving, there was a huge selection of yarns and colours - something for everyone. Jane's husband Graham prepared a lovely lunch and there was tea/coffee, cakes and wine - wine's always good.
I had such a great time at the weaving course. My aim was to learn the basics so that i could attempt to try this at home myself (no doubt returning for another class to stop any bad habits!) and i have certainly achieved this. I managed to go home with a finished piece after a full day of teaching (and eating of lovely food). I fully intend on getting a frame for myself as a Christmas present.
I had a wonderful day at Jane's tapestry workshop! We started off getting to know the group over coffee and cake. Then throughout the day, Jane provided helpful and encouraging advice and we also got inspiration from looking at each others work in a relaxed atmosphere. Jane's husband Graham did a fantastic job providing us with lovely home cooked food! I would definitely recommend this course to anyone. It would make a fantastic present. I am already looking forward to my next course!
Very we'll organised, course material well presented with a agenda that allowed you experiment as you progressed. Excellent one to one tuition when required.
We'll organised from beginning to end with a excellent lunch break in the middle.
I would recommend the course, and I will be back with my wife in tow, next year.
My first day's course was an inspired birthday gift. What an enjoyable and exciting day it was. Tactful expertise, attentiveness and plentiful resources to further inspire, in relaxed informality, allow you to feel confident that anything is possible. (A lovely lunch, home-made baking and refreshments are included too). I had also been given one of Jane's home kits, which I used the following day to start my second tapestry (the kit has everything you need). One framed work completed, and another to continue at home, and a huge sense of achievement and anticipation.
Second time at one of Jane's courses for me and birthday treat for my sister. We both had a superb time and are so delighted with our framed seascape tapestries. This is just such a lovely day out. Jane has the patience of a saint and is an excellent teacher- great with colour, technique and encouragement. Graham, Jane's husband is also a perfect host and the plentiful supply of tea, cake, lunch and general hospitality just adds to the day. The whole experience just makes your heart sing! Don't hesitate to book..you'll love the studio, teaching, food, chat and gorgeous views... Brilliant walking away with a framed piece. Thank you.
Booked a course with a group of friends and Jane could not have been more welcoming or helpful if she tried. Some of us followed the course Jane created, and some brought their own pictures for inspiration to work on. Jane handled our group wonderfully - giving each of us the attention we required.
Jane's studio was an amazing room of creativity. I wanted to move in, it was such an inspiring, light room - a perfect studio space.
The course was fully catered, and delicious at that. All in all it was a wonderful day and a fabulous experience. We all left clutching our art with big smiles on our faces.
Thoroughly enjoyed my day. Agreat atmosphere and I felt I learned a lot. Very pleased with the finished piece I brought home ready to hang. Everything is supplied, including much food which is beautifully home made.
I spent a lovely day yesterday at Jane's tapestry weaving course. As a complete novice I did not know what to expect, but Jane was an excellent and patient teacher. I am quite chuffed with the framed tapestry I bought home. The coffee, cake and lunch were also wonderful, thank you Graham!
A year on and I went back for more! I spent a wonderfully engrossing day in good company and with excellent food (thank you Graham) what more could you ask for?
I was late and the welcome was as warm as ever. We warped up and began to tackle our project 'Kilim'. It is amazing how everyones work differs and the colours were wonderful.
I came home with a framed piece of work - Jane now has frames on site - so todays task is to hang it in my growing gallery of Tapestry Weaving.
You leave immensely proud of your achievment and there are strange feelings of addiction for a very achievable craft!
Now when can I rebook?
I have now done three of Jane's courses - tapestry weaving is addictive! Everything is so well organised and all materials are supplied enabling students to produce a wee tapestry to be proud of. Jane gives lots of help and encouragement, demonstrating some of the technicalities in a way that even the most cack-handed can follow. We were given a very clear instruction booklet and there is lots in the studio to inspire. The time passes all too quickly. A terrific day all round!
Oh! The catering is terrific too, a delicious lunch plus lovely home baking at the start and finish.
This is a brilliant course and would definitely recommend it to beginners and experienced students alike. Jane is a fantastic teacher and has infinite patience. Her studio is a lovely place to work in and she is very inspiring. Lunch and refreshments are delicious and it is a very convivial atmosphere in which to work! I was warned that her courses are addictive and I can see why!!! Would highly recommend Alana Sayers
A great day out, even for someone like me - not arty at all.
Coffee and home baking to start, a lovely lunch with a spot or two of wine, and to finish of the day tea and cakes.
After a very apprehensive start it was al guns going ............. Wanted to be more adventurous than my teacher thought, as a result was last finished. Very proud of my work, and am hoping to get it framed.
We (family of 4) had a fabulous day last month at one of Jane's tapestry weaving workshops. Even our 13-year-old who wasn't keen at the idea became completely engrossed and produced a lovely piece. Jane put loads into the day, providing us with a bespoke design of the lovely seaside view from our living room window so we now have a beautiful set of four to remind us of a wonderful day together. Highlights of the day were - an extremely warm welcome; very comfortable, large and inspiring studio space with unrivalled countryside views; delicious lunch with home baking; Jane's tireless enthusiasm and encouragement and Graham (Jane's husband, and studio assistant) who was so kind and attentive to all our needs. We're all looking forward to booking our next workshop (even the 13-year-old!)
I attended Jane's course this weekend and I absolutely loved it. I was a complete beginner yet came away with a piece of work that I am very pleased with. Jane gave individual help to us all continually and we all worked at our own level. Add to that a delicious morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea plus very good company and this was an ideal way to learn and have fun! Thanks a lot - I'll definitely be back.
the cottage garden workshop, 6.8.2013. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and learned new design techniques and made a delightful piece which now hangs in my hall and already it has been much complimented. all down to the excellent teaching.
I arrived to a warm welcome of coffee scenting the air and Graham in pinny already preparing lunch! Jane's wonderfully light and airy studio was full of marvellous things to look at and admire. I had looked forward to my day enormously and wasn't disappointed. From setting the frame to the final tapestry I took home and feeling distinctly proud of myself I can't wait to find a space in my busy life to go back and enjoy it all once again and more! I highly recommend Jane and her talent and my day spent happily and productively on this course.
What a fantastic fun day in a wonderfull setting . Thoroughly enjoyed the workshop , with excellent facilities a huge choice of material and reference books, every stage was clearly explained and demonstraited . Jane and Graham have really put a huge amount of work into the preparation making sure you are made to feel completely at ease , and always on hand to help out . With the most delicious lunch and coffee and cake to help the creative juices flowing ! ;-)
I cant recommend this course enough. I arrived cockily thinking I would recreate the bayeux tapestry- its only after trying it for a day you realise how talented she is! Its very tricky but jane eases you in gently, she gives you just the right amount of information for a beginner, so you can come away with something you are proud of. On top of all that, the homemade biscuits and coffee at the beginning, followed by the best lunch I have ever had in a workshop, meant that it was a brilliant day. Fantastic!
what a super day I had today - and I weaved a face!
excellent friendly instruction, great company and a nice lunch! my work has been heavily complimented this evening - my son thinks it is beautiful (particularly for a beginner).
I am going back for the next course in August and would highly recommend!
thank you Jane.
The best craft course I've ever been to!! Jane and her husband, Graham make you so welcome, with amazing home cooked food and a wonderful attic studio to work in. Views over the beautiful midlothian countryside and all the colours of wool you could hope for to weave from. Really inspiring lovely day out, really tailored to all abilities. Can't recommend a days tapestry weaving with Jane enough!
A most enjoyable day's weaving - the fact that we didn't leave at the specified end time has to say a lot! I had brought an idea for my little tapestry picture - it was not quite practical but Jane showed me how to adapt the design in front of me and I was able to try that out.
Atmosphere was most welcoming, the food was excellent and it was a rewarding day's course.
Jane's tapestry course is so fabulous- she is the most supportive teacher. Her attic space is magical. She makes you feel so creative even if you don't have a lot of confidence. I would recommend to anyone. I was the least qualified in my group but was made to feel skilled. Lunch was delicious also.
This experience would be a wonderful present.
