About the Course
These percher hats - favoured by people such as Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle - are my favourite styles of hats to both make and wear! They are so versatile, and once you master this technique, you will have endless possibilities for your millinery creations!
We use a wooden shape to create the base of your hat, shaping the material around it - a process called blocking. There are my own blocks for you to use while you are in the studio, or you have the choice of buying your very own block to use and also take away with you!
Come along to this workshop to learn this technique and make your very own, one-of-a-kind creation on the day, and take away the skills to make so many more too!
This workshop is suitable for beginners, and also for those of you who have attended any of my workshops previously, but please note there is a significant amount of hand-sewing! It’s a simple running stitch, but it does take time, so you need to be able to enjoy that too!
All materials and tools will be provided on the day, and I will supply all the links for materials if you wish to purchase more for your own use.
Suitable for beginners & suitable for vegans!
Booking in advance is essential.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
All materials and tools that you need on the day are included.
About the venue: There is space for one car on the driveway and street parking available just outside. We are accessible by bus, on the 50 route from Birmingham city centre, or the 76 from Solihull.
We do have a downstairs toilet, but there is a step into the house through the porch. Please contact me with any access enquiries.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this course, but I absolutely loved it. I had no experience in millinery or sewing but by the end of the day I had made my own unique fascinator which I love and all I need now is an occasion to wear it.
I have already ordered materials in order to make some more fascinators at home. I am waiting to see what other courses Rachel might run next year.

Thoroughly enjoyed this course, and thanks to Rachel's patience my end result was pretty good, despite my mistakes. Would not hesitate to recommend this to friends and hopefully Rachel would not mind me joining another workshop.

Rachel is a lovely warm person who is gifted and passionate about this craft.
It was a wonderful day with 3 other lovely people but we gelled beautifully!
A "must" for anyone going to a special event who wants to make something truly beautiful and unique. Thanks Rachel, Suszanne, Mary and Christine, a pleasure to meet you all... Venue perfect. :)

Rachel was very friendly and explained everything very clearly and fully. We spent the morning learning techniques and the afternoon making our own fascinators. She had masses of materials and samples of fascinators so we were spoilt for choice. She even supplied a beautiful strong hatbox for our finished creation.

A "fascinating" workshop. Rachel is a knowledgeable teacher and the course content was perfect for beginners. Synamay is an amazing fabric. A thoroughly enjoyable day and I hope to do another course soon.

Really enjoyed the whole day - Rachel was really knowledgeable and friendly. The techniques were explained thoroughly and if we had any questions Rachel went through the answers in a way that all of us could understand. I would definitley book for another course with Rachel again.

Fantastic facinator workshop, nice venue, lots of parking, excellent explanation and demonstration by a very experienced tutor, covering all techniques with a wide range of examples to inspire. I created a work of art and will be wearing my showpiece facinator at a wedding next week. Delighted I signed up and would recommend the course.

We had the most fantastic time at Rachel’s workshop. I learnt the different techniques used for using Sinamay and made a couple of facinators. Brilliant fun and we would both highly recommend the course to anyone interested and wishing to make a facinators. Big thank you Rachel

I had an absolutely amazing time today on this fascinator making course. Rachel is an excellent tutor explains everything really clearly and she is always at hand to help with any queries you have. I came away with a love for sinamay and making fascinators. I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to make a custom piece.

I really enjoyed this workshop and I had such a fabulous day. I am feeling very inspired now and eager to try and recreate many of the techniques that we were taught. I found the way the workshop was structured was a big help as you can get overwhelmed when you are shown a lot at once. Rachel broke it up into bite size pieces and then watched and helped in between.
Getting feedback on what we were doing as we went along was very encouraging. We then moved on to learn even more. So many new skills to bring to my other work.
The range of colours and materials that were available was very inspiring too. It's easy to visualise when there are so many complimenting colours and shapes to start with. I can see this becoming a new hobby.

I absolutely loved Rachel's fascinator workshop! I went into it not sure what to expect, it was nothing like I have ever done before, and my brain doesn't naturally lend itself to working in 3D, but the directions and demonstrations were well done and easy to follow. I came home with so many new skills and techniques I can't wait to explore more, and finish my fascinator (I was far too indecisive to do so on the day). I would recommend it to anybody, it was great fun, I thoroughly enjoyed the day.
