Mid Century Modern Refinishing & Restoration Workshop - All levels - 3 days

Description

This 3 day course at our Cotswoldian workshop is designed to give the student the fundamental basics and in depth professional skills of French polishing, contemporary wood finishes and woodcare. You will take a Mid Century Modern piece of furniture back to it's original state, or if a bit more adventurous, redesigning into a contemporary portfolio piece (See portfolio photos for inspiration). Each student will work on one portfolio piece of their choice allowing them to go through the full process within 3 working days. In between refinishing your chosen pieces we will also have numerous sample boards to complete. The course covers the following – French Polishing & Contemporary wood finishes - Health and Safety Polishing materials, tools and personal set up list Stripping, neutralising and sanding/wire wool techniques Staining and grain fillers Shellacs, touching in and waxes Finishes – varnishes, stains, oils, polishes Brush, rag and rubber techniques Aftercare Photography Start up business advice. The course is designed for groups of 1 to 4. Covid regulations in place. Get in touch for more details and to book your place.

What's included in the price?

All power tools/hand tools, abrasives, masking, grain fillers, stains, stain blocking, primers, brushes and wood finishes provided. Lunch, top coat paint choice, apron, hand gel, mask and furniture to be provided by the student.

"I took a very scratched veneered desk which Ollie showed me how to recover. A lot of hard work stripping, sanding, grain filling and building up lots of coats of finish. I wanted to lighten the colour and with his help have given it a much nicer appearance. He also showed me how to french polish a walnut coffee table which now looks like the day it was bought over 40 years ago. I now have confidence to use powered sanding tools and enough basic knowledge to have a go at home. I met other students and Ollie encouraged us all to learn about each other’s pieces. I would recommend anyone to take a course with Ollie and will save up to go again."

"What a brilliant few days with Ollie in his workshop in the Cotswolds. I arrived with only basic skills, clutching my tired-looking bentwood chair...and a tendency to reach for the power sander! I left with a beautiful chair - that I felt incredibly proud to have brought back to life over the three days - and a much deeper understanding of the techniques, tools and products to do things properly and to a high standard. The graft involved in hand stripping and hand sanding isn't a walk in the park but it's so fulfilling to move step by step through the process...and of course getting to the shiny-gorgeous stage which is the most fun! Ollie teaches you to be patient, as he himself is a very patient teacher. This attention to detail as you focus on a single piece for many hours, is very therapeutic, clearing your mind of everything in your busy life as you concentrate hard on every detail of the piece you're working on. Everyone I mentioned my course to - and when I've shown them the finished chair - has said "wow that's very cool". If you're thinking about booking up with Ollie for a special present for yourself or a loved one, just do it. Whoever is lucky enough to attend will learn loads, have a fab time and great conversation, and will come away with a real appreciation for beautiful furniture and things done properly."

"Ollie manages to balance imparting huge amounts of his vast knowledge and at the same time enabling you to build confidence, take on new techniques and stretch your own abilities. At the same time he approach is inclusive, appraising unexpected issues that arise and jointly agreeing options and solutions. In my experience this is the sign of a great teacher. I was totally absorbed by the process of transforming my piece of furniture but also building the foundations of knowledge for future practice and further skills development. It was a full on 3 days but hugely enjoyable, with good company and I feel confident that my skills have been well and truly expanded."
