Description

Capture the human form on this practical workshop and learn to make your very own life cast sculpture directly from the body. Whether you’re interested in sculpture, design, prosthetics or special effects for film and TV, this workshop is a valuable opportunity for anyone wanting to expand their skills and knowledge of the mould making process in relation to the human form. Lifecasting allows you to capture the human form in perfect detail, from the texture of wrinkles through to fingerprints and all the individual quirks that make us unique. On this course, you’ll work with specialist mould-making materials including alginate and plaster to create a cast. During the course, you will: - learn about the safe use of the materials when applying them to the body, including the use of release agents and how to keep your model comfortable - get hands-on experience using alginate to create a mould of your own hand - cast a replica of your hand using plaster to take home with you - observe a demonstration of a larger torso casting on a live model - leave with the technical knowledge to continue creating your own work safely - build an understanding of how to take on more complex projects - look at how lifecasting is used in different creative industries and applications - be able to ask specialist technical questions related to your own projects. What will I gain? You’ll leave with a good understanding of the processes commonly used in lifecasting and contemporary sculpture. You’ll have completed a cast of your own hand and have technical notes to help you to go on creating more of your own sculptures in a safe and fun way. Level: Beginner Entry requirement: You should have an interest in mould making and lifecasting, and an eagerness to explore new ways of working and sharing your ideas. Where you’ll learn: You will be based in the School of Art and Design on the City Campus. You'll receive training and advice on how to use the fantastic equipment in our specialist casting and mould making workshop to develop your ideas and create exciting work. You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and reference. Tutor Profile: Ryan Young is a body cast artist who has extensive industry experience as a model and props maker for animation and film having worked on blockbusters such as Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World, Star Wars VI and 24: Live Another Day, plus theatre work.
