About the Course

Learn the skills and techniques for knitting and crochet. We will look at both traditional skills and contemporary ideas exploring the usual and unusual aspects of working with yarn. All levels of experience are welcome each term.
Term 1. Learn the techniques through sample-making and completing small projects.
Term 2. Explore different yarns including making your own to use in projects.
Term 3. Develop your skills and techniques, working on more challenging personal projects.

Who is this course for
This course is aimed at people with no previous knowledge of knitting and crochet and for those wanting to broaden their skills and techniques to take on more challenging projects.

What does this course cover
This course is an introduction to both knitting and crochet. Basic knitting techniques will be learnt including casting on, knit and purl stitches, casting off, increase, decrease and to read and follow a simple pattern to make a small accessory.
Then through small projects, basic crochet techniques will be learnt, including reading and following a pattern and being creative with the new skills you have learnt.

We will discuss different aspects of knitting and crochet and how they may be combined to make functional pieces to wear, jewellery or items for the home as well as artists and crafts people who use knitting to make sculptural pieces too.

Students will have time to work on their own personal projects and those with some experience can have a go at more challenging techniques which may include complex stitch patterns, experimenting with none traditional materials and felted knitting & crochet techniques.

What will it be like
Teaching methods:
Visual demonstration and verbal explanation.Written handouts with visual diagrams.One-to-one teaching. Group discussions.

Learning methods:
Hands-on practical activities Reading handouts and following instructions.One-to-one and group discussion.

Questions and answers during group discussions and one-to-one teaching.
Record students' progress and achievement on an assessment sheet as they achieve the course objectives.

Practical work produced is evidence of learning.

What else do you need to buy or do
Some materials will be supplied by the college and/or available to buy at cost price. Students need to provide materials for larger personal projects.

Students should bring a note book, pencil and pen. We do have a range of knitting needles and crochet hooks for you to borrow but if you have your own, please bring these with you.

Gather visual research to inspire their projects. Visit relevant galleries and exhibitions. Source materials (a list of suppliers will be supplied). Continue and complete work as required.
