If you love glass, colour and jewellery this fun course will give you an excellent introduction to making your own fused glass jewellery. Day courses take place on Saturday throughout the year taught by Eleanor Watson from The Jewellery Boat.
We will explore a wide variety of techniques for fused glass, working on a small scale to produce individually designed cabochons for jewellery. Using colour, pattern, inclusions, and texture you will be amazed at the scope of this lovely material. You will make pendants, earrings and brooches learning how to design them to be worn as jewellery along the way.
All glass is provided including a selection of dichroic glass and fittings. Each student is given a goody bag of jewellery findings (including the appropriate glue) to use with their glass such as silver plated bails, brooch fittings, cuff links and ear studs. These can be glued onto the back of the jewellery made once it has been fired.
Areas covered: jewellery design, the various types of fusing glass available, how to safely cut glass, the best tools to use, glass compatibility, using inclusions and glass media, full and tack fuse firing cycles, and a wide variety of decorative techniques.
Your finished pieces can either be picked up after firing or if more convenient we will post them to your home by Royal Mail (for a small P+P fee)
The day starts at 10:00am and finishes around 4.30pm with a break for lunch of 30 minutes. The studio is located in Stoke Newington surrounded by lovely cafes and coffee shops to take a break or alternatively please feel free to bring a packed lunch.
Due to the need for continued self-distancing, we now limit each workshop to a maximum of 4 people providing the advantage of a small class where you can experiment with an experienced tutor on hand at each stage. PPE Face Visors will be provided which we will ask all students to wear whilst in the studio, and we will provide supplies of hand sanitiser. We will also have a supply of face masks and gloves if students would prefer to wear these as well.
Eleanor has a wealth of experience in working with fused glass creating colourful jewellery. She also teaches jewellery making including silver, glass, enamelling and cloisonné on copper and silver, polymer clay and anodised aluminium. See The Jewellery Boat website for more details.

I attended the beginners glass jewellery course in January and it was fantastic. Eleanor was a patient and informative teacher who took the time to ensure everyone in the group was secure in each technique before moving on.
We had ample time to create our own pieces and while we were given free reign, Eleanor was on hand to offer advice and assistance.
I’m so proud of my finished pieces and I can’t recommend this course highly enough. If you are considering booking, do it. You will not regret it, and you’ll have a load of beautiful glass jewellery as well!
Response from Eleanor Designs:Hello Tamsin,
The glass Jewellery workshop with Eleanor was fantastic. she is a great teacher and taught us lots of different fusing techniques in a very short time which we were able to put into practice and fire in the kiln. I made some pendants using dichroic glass and some with copper inclusions and textured paper and decals. I also experimented with painting with copper oxide and reactive glass .
The course was very well structured and Eleanor was very attentive to all the students and explained all the techniques very clearly. It is a lovely studio with a small group of students.
I didn’t want the workshop to end ! I am very inspired to continue and develop the techniques I learnt and I am looking forward to doing another course in the future .
Highly recommended !
Response from Eleanor Designs:Hello Holly, thank you for your lovely review - it was delightful to have you on the course exploring so many creative techniques. I really look forward to seeing how you combine them with your beautiful artworks and bee-keeping interests too! I really liked the wide variety of bubbled glass pieces you made, the turquoise on red is very interesting isn't it? I look forward to you coming back and learning more soon! Thanks again! Eleanor
I thoroughly enjoyed this course. I wondered what could I possibly make and at the end had made cufflinks, pendants, beads, earrings and broaches. The sparkling vibrancy of the pieces that I’ve made has made me keenly look for another course with the tutor, Eleanor. The studio is a treasure in just the right location. The content, findings and the duration of the course was spot on. Well worth doing.
Response from Eleanor Designs:Thank you Carol! It was great to have you on my course and see you explore glass as a new medium for your jewellery making. Well done, you should be proud of your beautiful pieces! I hope to see you again soon!
I attended this workshop in October as my children had bought me a voucher as a surprise birthday present. I had no idea what to expect but had a really great experience. Eleanor is a very patient, kind and enthusiastic teacher who took care to ensure that everyone was supported and encouraged. I certainly did not expect to make 7 different pieces in one day! I loved the experience and would recommend it to anyone.
Eleanor is a really patient, unassuming tutor who gives concise step by step instructions to achieve really great results in just a day. Her examples are both inspiring and attainable. Her passion for the art is self evident and nothing is too much trouble.
Rainbow Glass is a working studio too and is so busy its amazing Eleanor is able to fit any classes in.
A great experience and warm welcome. Would highly recommend.
A great day! I had never worked with glass before but Eleanor was a brilliant teacher, patient and informative. I had no idea glass was so versatile and was amazed at how much we could make in a few hours. The day was utterly absorbing and I would reccomend the course to anyone.
I spent a wonderful Saturday learning how to cut glass and then turn it into lovely pieces of fused glass jewellery via Eleanor’s kiln. Eleanor is a fantastic teacher - she gives very clear instructions and is generous with her encouragement and ideas. She made everyone in the class feel relaxed and positive with her warm friendly attitude. I look forward to joining Eleanor for another class soon! Thanks again Eleanor :-)
Excellent course. Fabulous teacher. Throughly enjoyed the course. Highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed the class. It was a great refresher for me but I also learnt a lot of things I didn't know before. Eleanor is very knowledgeable and has a great teaching style. She really took the time to try to explain things. The day was very well structured. There were a great range of samples to showcase different techniques and ideas. The studio is also well equipped with lots of different types of glass to try. It was a really fun day which sped by all too quickly.
A well structured course with an excellent level of teaching and guidance. The work space was small but sufficient for a small group and therefore good for individual guidance. Good facilities and equipment. Lots of opportunities to be creative. Ideal for beginners.
I spent a delightful day on my first (of many, I hope) fused glass jewellery workshop, led by Eleanor. Eleanor's preparation was evident, since she had all the resources ready for us, so we were able to maximise our time designing and making. Her step-by-step tutorial was pitched perfectly and she was on hand to advise when needed. Moreover, as there were only six participants in the workshop, there was a very industrious, supportive atmosphere, and we were able to bounce ideas off each other. I came away at the end of the day feeling totally relaxed and secretly chuffed with my achievements. A few days later, I felt like a child opening her Christmas stocking when I unwrapped my jewellery, which had now been fired and expertly packaged - to avoid damage - and the enclosed personal note of encouragement from Eleanor was a lovely touch. I can't wait till next time!
Eleanor's beginners' fused jewellery class was excellent. She was very good at giving instructions, and explaining and showing us how to cut glass, and telling us which different techniques and materials can be used. I have been to a fused glass course before but Eleanor helped to explain things in a different way which helped me understand better. I liked that she had spent time preparing selections of different colours of glass and bags of jewellery fastenings which gave me ideas about what I could make. This course was very helpful and made me wish to continue to use glass.
Thank you very much!
The fused glass class was excellent! It was a bit nerve wracking to begin with learning a new skill and being a complete novice with glass. Eleanor, the teacher was fantastic. Good demonstrations as she explained how to cut the glass, combine things, how to make 'sandwiches' of all the glass and how to use the various types of glass, frits, threads and more!
Eleanor was very supportive and totally encouraging everyone to explore all the different ways to use the various types of glass, frits, threads and get creative and have fun!
There was lots of sample pieces available to show the different techniques and how things came together after they'd be in the kiln overnight.
It was just great fun and so engrossing! I leaned a lot and am planning on doing the Advance Fusing weekend course in November. Wonderful class and highly recommended.
I really enjoyed the fused glass weekend course.
