Description
How do you use a pencil? Taking us back to basics this workshop explores a pencil as a “tool”. How can we signify light and dark with a line? How do we describe form with our marks? So many of us start drawing lessons with observation and become despondent, this workshop is about exploring and experimenting without the constraints of observation and suitable for those at the very beginning of their artistic journey. If you have been saying you would like to learn to draw, this will give you the confidence to delve into your creativity and enjoy investigating how to create meaningful marks on paper. At a glance: - An opportunity to explore your creativity in Hawkwood's beautiful Haybarn. - Explore drawing techniques in a supportive, friendly and nonjudgmental environment. - Develop techniques and skills that can support future drawing projects. - Take home a series of booklets full of techniques for future reference. - Two-course lunch and refreshments provided. What you will gain: - A basic understanding of how to use a pencil. - Skills and mark making that can be transferred into future projects. - Knowledge of different pencils and papers to use. - A greater confidence in your drawing and creative ability. More about experimental drawing: Drawing can take on a multitude of forms, yet so many of us were taught that it is only about representation and consequently believe we cannot draw. This course aims to shake up those beliefs and arm you with skills you can continue to practice and develop. We will start the day with some Art history. How do artists make marks on paper that culminate in beautiful and sometimes challenging images? Taking these ideas forward we will explore creating marks through a variety of exercises. Although simple, through repeated trial and error you will build up a “dictionary" of pencil techniques that can be practiced and expanded into future drawing. How do you hold a pencil? How much pressure do you apply? It sounds so obvious, but being encouraged to become conscious of techniques we are using can really assist with the basics of drawing. We will create a series of small paper booklets that can be used for future reference, incorporating your own notes and reminders. The day will also include a few formal exercises looking at proportion. Each stage will be carefully explained with each person having one to one support.
