Eco Printing is the natural technique of printing by direct heat contact botanical material on cloth or paper.
During this week end you will learn the basic and practise Eco printing on cellulose fibbers that is paper, cotton, linen and jute and protein fibbers that is Silk and Wool. We will use some local Scottish leaves for that purpose. We will add to the Eco Printing process some basic Natural dyes such as Onion Skins, Budleah, etc...
July is a magical month for Eco Printing as the leaves at at their best .... The Glasgow parks and gardens will be the natural source for our foraging.
You will be using both the steaming process and the boiling process and produce to produce prints on paper and cloth. The first day will cover the basics, preparing the cloth through scouring and mordanting... making prints... on the second day we will add colour to our prints through natural Eco dyed sourced locally like St John's wort and Onion skins as well as using more exotic ones like Sapan wood... we will also look into our kitchen drawers for ingredients for this very purpose and use Turmeric.
You will get the chance to complete a number of prints you could turn into a journal on the second day if there is time and to print a Silk Scarf to take home... We may even have a wee dip in my Indigo vat if it is on the go.
If you have previous experience you will refresh quickly the basic and go further... if you are a newbee you will be going away as a total addict... This technique is creative and seriously addictive.
This technique is perfect if you are a textile lover, a sketchbook fanatic, or if you cant draw but are dying to create beautiful prints.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning to Eco Print, I had never done it before and was fascinated to learn how it all works as well as the sheer joy of just playing! Exploring the possibilities of the different leaves and finding myself developing a greater understanding of the process meant that by day two I was confidently experimenting with a range of leaves, papers and fabrics. I was thrilled with how much work I had to take home and look forward to more happy hours practicing this new craft and using my prints in other projects.
