Drapes to Dungarees at Cowshed Creative, the Lake District near Windermere

Bespoke Dungarees in a Day at Cowshed Creative, Lake District National Park

At Cowshed Creative in the Lake District, we run an extensive range of art, craft and heritage workshops in our beautifully converted art studio.

DRAPES TO DUNGAREES: Have you got an old pair of curtains that you love but are no longer in use? Perhaps a duvet cover from childhood, or a linen tablecloth that just never finds itself on the table? Come and learn how to turn them into a bespoke pair of dashing and daring dungarees, designed to fit your shape.

The course will cover the whole process and you’ll leave with a new or honed vision for creative reuse. In this spirit; second hand materials are highly encouraged, but if you have your eye on a new piece of fabric that’s great too.

We’ll start the day with DIY pattern altering to make sure your dungarees will be the right height, width, length and style. We’ll then move onto cutting the pieces, sewing them together, making straps and attaching buckles. We envisage everyone leaving with a fully constructed pair of dungarees ready to strut into the Kentmere hills, but if we run out of time you will leave with the skills and confidence (and a handy set of diagrammed instructions!) to finish them at home.

Meg Stuart graduated with first class honours in Product Design, and in 2018 exhibited at New Designers in London. She entered the world of textiles in a DIY fashion; from a love of clothing, colour and fabric and a desire to alter and up-cycle things. She has been making clothes from curtains for the last 5 years, and runs a small business specialising in dungarees. A strong creative mind, Meg has a penchant for turning almost anything into wearable art - an infectious and inspiring passion she will bring to the course.

This workshop will be at Cowshed Creative, based in a traditional converted Lakeland barn at Browfoot Farm. The art studio is a stunning open plan space with plenty of room to wander outside and take inspiration from the amazing Lakeland landscape and environment of the peaceful Kentmere valley. Make it a special break and stay in a luxury camping pod on the farm. Check our website for availability.

All our tutors are carefully selected professionals and experts with extensive teaching experience. Whilst this is a relatively new venture, George, who has set up Cowshed Creative, has many years of experience programming and running creative courses at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and for Cumbria Adult Education.

I honestly can not speak highly enough about this course! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!
Meg was fantastic and helped me every step of the way. I hadn’t used a sewing machine since I was at school but Meg gave me the confidence to just have a go - and it paid off! Meg was so welcoming, calm and enthusiastic and left me wanting to go home and make dungarees for everyone in my family!
George was a fantastic host. She made everyone feel welcome, kept us warm, topped us up with water, coffee and tea, and made the most amazing lunch - I asked for the recipe it was so delicious!
I really would recommend this course to anybody! Still buzzing about it a week later! 🙂

Response from Cowshed Creative:

Thanks Jess for such amazing feedback. Lovely to meet you and hope to see you again.
