Project based courses to develop a portfolio of textile designs using Photoshop. Students enrolling onto terms two and three are expected to have some knowledge of Photoshop.
Term 1 introduces students to Photoshop and covers themes such as floral, geometric and conversational designs using drawing, printing and collage on screen.
Term 2 focuses on developing design collections and professional print techniques for textiles.
Term 3 covers homeware designs for mugs, placemats, coasters and fashion samples.
Who is this course for
This is a project based course that is designed for students of all levels who are interested in playfully exploring different themes, ways of working, skills and materials with a view to starting or expanding your design portfolio.
It is preferable if students have some textile, graphics, fine art or Photoshop experience, but beginners can apply as the course can cover basic skills.
What does this course cover
The aim of the course is to introduce you to 3 popular themes that are often used in textiles art and design: geometric, floral and conversational designs. This is a good starting point for beginners and a great way for more experienced students to refresh your creative practice and develop your portfolio.
The course will cover hand and digital techniques in pattern designs and image transfer on to fabrics. You will learn how to transfer drawings or digital photographs into a textile print and how to work to a brief or theme.
What will it be like
Visual demonstration and verbal explanation.
Written / visual handouts with diagrams for technical processes.
Hands on practical experience.
Taking notes and making drawings/designs.
Working from handouts.
Assessment will be by:
Questions and answers during group discussions
Weekly / regular set learning outcomes to track progress
What else do you need to buy or do
Basic A4 sketch book
USB Pen drive or other device to save work on.
Materials for final project, which depends on the student and their chosen project.
Professionally printed image on fabric, approx. £25
You will be expected to bring along visual research in a digital form - this could include colours, textures, design and images you use for inspiration and digital images and drawing you use for content.
You will be given homework to develop designs, visual research and digital images most weeks.
You will be encouraged to work at home to practice and develop your computing skills
You will be free to do any additional research and study on top of that.
