About the Course
Coracles are traditional riverboats. Round in shape, they are paddled with one oar.
On this two-day course you will make a traditional ironbridge coracle to take home, you’ll also have a chance to practice your coracling skills on the lake in front of Staunton Harold Hall.
The coracle you make will be finished but need painting with bitumen paint after the course.
Kevin and Ellen Grimley have been making coracles since 1995 and have led coracle workshops in a variety of locations including Donegal, Ireland. They often demonstrate coracles on the canals near their home in Leicestershire. In addition to workshops, exhibitions and demonstrations, they have built coracles for theatre, TV and film production, including for the BBC programme ‘Coast’ in 2006.
Please bear in mind that you will need a large vehicle or roof rack in which to transport your coracle home. Dimensions are approximately 11.5” deep x 4’6” long x 4’2”wide.
While you will make a simple paddle in the course you can combine this course with the paddle making course which follows and make an exceptional paddle!
Greenwood Days have been running woodland craft courses since 1998. The course centre is set in a beautiful 90 acre wood in the National Forest on the Leicestershire/Derbyshire border.
Our tutors are all highly skilled professional craft workers and teachers who share our passion for preserving, promoting and passing on these crafts and techniques. Come and enjoy the beauty of the woodland, be inspired, be creative, learn a new craft.
