Description
Learn how to craft a rope trivet and basket using a traditional knot pattern. Your tutor, Laurence, will guide you through the process for creating a round trivet or mat, before building on this technique to make a small basket. You will work with flax rope, and use traditional ropework tools such as a Swedish fid and sailmaker’s palm. At a Glance An introduction to ropework skills and tools. More about Celtic Knot Trivet and Basket Making The morning will be spent learning to make a rope trivet (or mat), using a traditional knot pattern, and incorporating the technique of splicing using a Swedish fid. In the afternoon you will build on the patterns and methods used for the trivet to make a small round rope basket. The day will start with step-by-step demonstrations, progressing to self-paced working as you grow in confidence, with Laurence on hand throughout to guide and correct. We will be working with flax rope, sourced from a ropemaker in Yorkshire and made from European-grown fibre. There will be an informal discussion around the context of flax as a fibre for rope and other crafts, focusing on local sourcing and sustainability. You will be introduced to basic ropework terminology and tools, and Laurence will be able to offer guidance on other projects and resources to explore should you wish to continue your ropework journey. You will finish the day with a completed trivet (mat) measuring 24cm in diameter, and a small basket measuring 14cm in diameter.
