Carve your own picture-relief, or 3-D sculpture with experienced woodcarving teacher in Devon

You will use sharp traditional woodcarving tools and Devon-grown lime for carving. Lime is close-grained and soft with a very warm and welcoming feel and is the ideal wood for the project. You can use any of your own designs or choose one of mine. The design can be drawn straight onto the wood or transferred from paper to the wood. During the carving process your design can change and develop further. I will demonstrate and explain the correct and safe use of tools throughout the day. At the end of the day you will take home your own personally designed wood carving and will have experienced the process of creating a wood carving with traditional woodcarving tools. Limited to 2 participants, the workshop takes place in my woodcarving studio in South Devon which is set-up for teaching children and adults. My teaching experience is based on over 22 years of teaching woodcarving and other three dimensional arts and crafts to adults and children. I love sharing my experience and enthusing others in working with wood. The course is ideal for adults and children aged 12 upwards as a first introduction to the ancient art of wood carving. More experienced woodcarvers can benefit from this course by concentrating on a more complicated design and advanced finish. All materials and hot drinks are included. Please bring your own lunch.

With over 20 years of teaching experience I love sharing my skills and learn from my students. My own artistic work is inspired by the ever-changing and evolving forms in nature and the seasons. Animals and the development of plant forms, are a constant inspiration for me. Working wood with traditional hand tools and techniques is a very rewarding experience. Each piece of wood is different and carving is an inspiring conversation with a unique piece of living material.
