An instructional day during which I demonstrate how I build affordable national hives using easily available materials. It assumes no previous woodworking knowledge or experience.
New hives are expensive items to buy and it is easy to get caught out without enough spare kit when bees are preparing to swarm or we need to make a split. It's always useful to have a spare empty hive or at least a spare brood box and of course we always live in hope that we will needed spare supers!
During the day I will demonstrate how I make all the components of a national hive at an affordable cost using easily obtainable materials such as roofing batten and planed-all-round timber from my local timber yard and some free upcycled pallet timber.
I will demonstrate the assembly of a complete national hive, starting with the open-mesh floor and working up to the hive roof.
I will discuss:- sourcing materials; measurements ; cutting to size;
You will get plans, dimensions and instructions how to construct every component of the national hive so that you can easily build your own national hive at home.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Hot and cold drinks and two-course lunch
Plans, dimensions and instructions every component of the national hive, so that you can easily build your own national hive at home.

This was just what I needed to get me started with making my own hive kit. Dafydd showed us the handy tools that help, and where to get materials. He made it look very possible, even for beginner woodworkers like me. The lovely lunch was a bonus!
I am glad that the course was just what you needed and that you left feeling equipped and confident to buy materials, use tools and build your own hives. Your contribution to the course was invaluable. I look forward to seeing those new hives!
