About the Course
Our Learn to Sew Dress in a Dress class for beginners is the perfect class for people who want to sew their own clothes but need some extra guidance. The Bettine dress is a loose fitting dress with an elasticated waist, sleeve cuffs and flattering tulip skirt, with pocket options. It’s perfect for summer or can be worn with tights for a year-round wardrobe addition.
Our sewing classes are relaxed and friendly, taking place at our beautiful studio at Holme Grange Craft Village in Wokingham, Berkshire. You’ll get to use our brand new digital Janome sewing machines and class sizes are capped at five to ensure everyone gets the time and attention they need.
YOU WILL LEARN
Measuring yourself and choosing the correct pattern size
Understanding a sewing pattern
Cutting out your pattern & fabric accurately
Sewing and finishing seams
Adding a facing
Adding sleeve tabs
Creating an elastic waist casing
How to hem your dress
WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING
3m of light weight, drapey fabric. We suggest viscose, rayon, light weight soft denim, double gauze, soft cotton poplin or cotton lawn (If you aren’t sure, please contact us)
0.3m fusible interfacing (you can purchase this on the day or via our website)
Matching thread – we provide a wide choice of coloured threads to use during the class but if there is a specific colour match or top-stitching colour you would like, we recommend bringing your own
2 buttons for the optional sleeve tabs
You’ll know how to use a sewing machine (threading the needle, winding a bobbin, basic stitches). You can complete our Learn to Sew for complete beginners class or be of an equivalent experience level.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

I absolutely loved this course. To be able to complete a project in one day is great rather than commit to a few hours over several weeks. I was so proud of my dress afterwards and ordered more material that same week to make another dress. Sheona is so patient and explains things very clearly. I have been bitten by the dressmaking bug and hope to do another one of Sheona's classes.

I attended this class for my first attempt at dressmaking and was unsure where to start on my own. Sheona is an excellent teacher, the class was really comprehensive and she had lots of patience to ensure we were all comfortable with each stage. I am so happy with my dress and can't wait to make lots more!
