Course Start DatesSaturday 25th January 2020
About the Course
Join Artist Stacey Chapman for this one day course where we explore the craft of freehand machine embroidery. You will learn and find confidence in using appliqué, choosing the correct fabric to help depict your artwork plus all of the basics of freehand machine embroidery.
After the stunning initial results produced on this course in September, I am so happy to offer another day on this theme. If you would like to come along and start your own building or return for a second day to finish off your piece, either way, everyone is very welcome!
The pictured results are after just one day on this individual bespoke project and show the impressive results achieved. I am incredibly proud of the group and their stunning work.
If you would like to attend this workshop, you will need to provide me with an image of your chosen building which may be a monument, home or museum - you choose! Any structure that holds meaning for you and have always wanted to depict, now is your moment!
You will leave after the first day with the 'foundations' of your building, with plenty of confidence and knowledge to carry on your project at home on your own.
You will leave after the second day with either a completely finished project or somewhere well on the way to being so, depending on the complexity of your image.
You will be given guidance and ideas of how to begin or finish your project in a supportive and fun environment. Prescriptive instructions are not my forte - I am much more about assisting you to find your own visual language and supporting that to emerge through your work.
Throughout the day you will be encouraged to be playful and curious about how to create an artwork that expresses your own aesthetic style within your own skill set, whilst nudging you to take your creative confidence one step further!
All the while you will be building your confidence in design plus honing your skills in appliqué, in the use of texture, colour and finish plus freehand machine embroidery.
The course is a real event day - the sewing equivalent to a spa day! Set in a luxe venue overlooking the Main Sands of Margate, the workshop environment is not only beautiful and relaxing, it is also a nurturing, fun and creative environment where you will receive lots of encouragement and feedback.

I attended an 'Architectural Homage Workshop' with Stacey in September of his year at The Sands Hotel, Margate. This was with my sister as a birthday present to her. It was our first freehand machine embroidery workshop (beginners!) and definitely not our last. We are booked to go again in January of next year.
It was an inspiring experience, as Stacey coached us through the day and gave us the confidence to explore what we could achieve and create much more than we thought possible. There were some amazing and unique results and very happy participants.
Before the day we were asked to choose and send through a photo/picture of either a very personal, special building that resonated personally with us or a public building that we have always loved. This made each piece of work even more personal and meaningful … and also meant that Stacey had much preparation beforehand to have the right range of materials available for each person in the class. The amount of pre-event preparation that Stacey did for us was outstanding and made the day even more special as we were able to be very creative with the help of her pre-prepared instructions and with the amazing array of materials/ribbons/threads that were freely available for us to use.
… and because everyone had chosen a different subject, then every single one of us was working on a unique piece, copying, transferring images, using the freehand embroidery machines, selecting fabrics and threads and needing individual support and instruction on the machines.
Stacey was tireless in her enthusiasm and encouragement as well as passing on her great knowledge and expertise. What a very generous person .... and we loved it.
Such a fun day ….. all helped by a great venue at The Sands and a fabulous view of the sea as we worked!
I would definitely recommend anyone, beginners and experts, to join one of Stacey’s workshops.

Stacey's machine embroidery workshop at Sands Hotel in Margate was fantastic, I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn new skills and make new friends.
Stacey put so much effort into the preparation for the workshop - she created individual handmade worksheets for everyone in the class, which were each tailored to the specific projects that we had chosen.
Stacey is a very patient teacher, with such a warm, bubbly personality, her welcoming presence made the day very special.

Love stitching with her and an added bonus is the amazing view from the Sands Hotel over Margate sands and harbour.

I met Stacey at Handmade Fair and she had such a positive impact on me that I had not been sewing for a few years. Her course that day was so inspiring that I had got home and started sewing again. I attended her Paisley course on 2nd November at the Sands Hotel Margate. It was great value for money and the venue was beautiful and so relaxing.
Stacey is an amazing tutor and mentor, so positive and uplifting. Her courses are so inspiring, and she pushes you out of your comfort zone to try new ways of achieving fantastic art and crafts. I am so privileged to have met her as her work is outstanding.
I can only say if you have the opportunity to be on one of Stacey’s courses from Art Sea Craft Sea then do it you won’t regret it

What a fantastic day, wonderful view and Stacy was such an encouraging and enthusiastic tutor .
While giving guidance and showing us skills, we were made to feel our efforts and individual traits were as important to the projects we had chosen. Bearing in mind, we were all doing something different, this was no mean feat.
I came away with more sewing skills at the end of day, thank you Stacy.

I’ve attended Stacey’s workshops and found her patience and encouragement second to none. She shares her knowledge in such a warm and friendly manner, you feel thoroughly supported through out. The view from the venue, Sands, is beautiful; the beach, sea and sky. It’s a perfect backdrop to help the creativity flow.

I have participated in 2 of Stacey's course at the Sands hotel the first "expressive eye " wasn't sure what to expect and never having done a day workshop I was a bit hesitant. Stacy is such a lovely lady, warm and welcoming, explaining about herself and how she came to where she is.
Then onto the free motion! Bit worried never having done before. But Stacy was on hand all the time and had all materials to hand, after some expressive music and a bit of drawing we we were off! I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process from letting go and being creative to reigning in the design! My "expressive eye" is framed on my sewing room wall all framed.
The second experience the "fireworks " was just as enjoyable using different media, to make super art works which are now hooped in my sewing room!
Above all Stacy created a trusting and creative environment and there was lots of laughter too ! I really enjoyed both workshops ! And I am doing my first free motion quilt so I gained confidence too.

Stacey came along to the shop and put on a brilliant workshop for 8 ladies and did we have a fantastic day! Stacey put us all at ease wit the most beautiful happy smile. We learnt so much! so many ideas, tips and techniques that made the learning process a joy. I think each and every one of us were rather chuffed with what we had accomplished.
We will be doing another workshop with you in the near future, and thank-you.

I have attended a few of Stacey's courses and can thoroughly recommend them, whatever your level of craft is. Stacey is skilled at assessing your needs and challenging you gently to develop. She is inspiring, encouraging and supportive. Stacey is also generous with her fabrics and threads as well as her time, talent and skill. As well as this the courses take place in a lovely venue with views of Margate beach- watch the tide come In and go out during the day.

I attended one of Stacey's workshop's last year and I cannot recommend highly enough. I walked in one morning not even being able to stitch a button onto a coat and left in the afternoon with a piece of freehand embroidery artwork that I was really proud of! Stacey's teaching is positive and inspiring as well as knowledgable and allows anyone, be it a complete beginner like myself or a honed professional embroider, to accomplish fantastic personal work. The setting of the workshop is beautiful and when there were times for a break I loved looking out onto the golden sands of Margate beach. I live in Kent but found the journey to The Sands Hotel really easy - It was a 10 minute stroll from Margate train station. I will definitely be booking again.
