Maker's bio

I've been teaching for over 20 years and building things out of wood for a lot longer! I started running stool-making and woodworking classes in 2018 on a rather ad hoc basis. I was asked to run small ‘masterclasses’ in a local school and then ran classes in other people’s workshops. We moved to dedicated workshops of our own in 2023 to run courses full time. Lunch and snacks on the course are made by Bryony who trained at Le Cordon Bleu as a patisserie chef!

Zhaleh Bahraini reviewed: Building and weaving a simple stool at The Quiet Workshop

"This was a birthday gift to me as I am interested in carpentry and making my own furniture. I was a total beginner, my partner was somewhat experienced. I am neurodivergent; I found the workshop was really fantastically laid out, the instructions were clear, calm and well paced. A good balance of support and leaving to get on in silence. The breaks and snacks provided were well timed and very well thought out - providing sustenance and joy as they were delicious! I have an allergy which was very well catered for. The final result of the stool itself is outstanding - it has replaced my desk chair! It has great support in the side and front panels, with the weaving itself being really sturdy but providing good cushioning. They're thoroughly used in the house! The content of the workshop and both Stjohn and Bryony made the weekend really special. We can't wait to come back for either the same workshop (we want a set of four stools!) and/or a different one. Marcus reviewed: Building and weaving a simple stool at The Quiet Workshop

"Excellent course - much enjoyed. Learnt a lot more than simply making a stool. A lot of additional useful information and little skills/tricks to help improve the average wood “butcher” as well as coming home with a delightful piece of work. Seriously considering the chair making course as found it so interesting!! "

David Payne reviewed: Building and weaving a simple stool at The Quiet Workshop

"I had great pleasure in making a high stool at the Quiet Workshop last week. I have enjoyed working with wood for some years and this was a great opportunity to learn new skills and resurrect some skill that are long forgotten. All credit to StJohn for guiding me so skillfully. He is a good teacher."

The Quiet Workshop responded:

"David, thanks so much for your review. We’re glad you had a good time; you built a lovely stool. Best wishes, StJohn & Bryony"

Brett Moss reviewed: Building and weaving a side chair at The Quiet Workshop

"This has to be my all time favourite course, coming away with a beautifully crafted chair. This is the course you want if you are looking at learning multiple techniques in woodworking, steam bending, carpentry joints and weaving a seat base. St John is a fantastic tutor giving you space to work on your own project, but close by to offer support. Bryony’s cooking is something to behold, lunches & morning & afternoon breaks were always accompanied by delicious homemade creations. Yum"

The Quiet Workshop responded:

"Brett, thank you so much! That’s a lovely review to read. You were great company in the workshop and given your experience and absolute breeze to teach. Look forward to seeing you again soon! Best wishes, StJohn & Bryony"
