Jonathan Whittle reviewed: The clay portrait room

"My wife had arranged a sculpting course for us as a gift and I'd understood (assumed!) this would be woodcarving, so I was somewhat taken aback when we arrived to find a life model and buckets of fresh clay! Despite my initial reticence though, we both really enjoyed the course. Sculpting from a life model was certainly outside of my comfort zone, but the very relaxed atmosphere and Anthony's excellent tuition meant we were quickly in the swing of it. The process over the 9 weeks is very well structured and allows you to build skills and an understanding of the materials and tools at a manageable pace, with an enjoyable level of challenge throughout. The studio is a pleasant working environment and the other participants, some budding sculptors, some total beginners, were enjoyable company."

Rosemary Alderwick reviewed: The clay portrait room

"Just come back from my first evening at The Portrait Room and beforehand I was nervous that I would find it too challenging or that I wouldn't like it. --- I absolutely loved it, every aspect of the evening was just great. Anthony planned the lesson so well and explained what to do so well. The model was so nice and relaxed, everyone was engrossed but there was a convivial atmosphere with chatting, a coffee/tea break and great surroundings made it a wonderful evening. So looking forward to next week."

ALAN. T reviewed: Wood carving classes in Pembrokeshire, Wales

"I have been going to wood carving lessons at Anthony's for nearly 12 months, I have seen myself and other students improve over that time with Anthony's guidance and patience . All equipment, e.g carving chisels , mallets etc are supplied for your use and several types of wood are available for your project. Evenings are now getting darker, give yourself a new hobby I would recommend having a try at wood carving , ( come and meet new friends and the coffee and biscuits are not bad either). "With Anthony to guide me and supply all the necessary equipment I saw my basic paper design transformed into a simple relief wall plaque. There were different degrees of experience in the class but Anthony was able to spend time with all of us individually and collectively (tea break chats) as he explained the different properties of woods and use of the many chisels and mallets. An interesting and relaxing couple of hours a week."

"I was quite nervous about starting a course where I was a complete beginner and had little previous experience of any craft work. I need not have worried. Anthony's courses are relaxed, informative and really enjoyable. He tutors on an individual basis according to your skill level. He patiently guides you through your project giving clear and helpful suggestions in a non-intrusive way. The whole atmosphere is very relaxing and well worth trying."
