SO THRILLED for the second year running to be named WCB NATIONAL CHAMPION BLACKSMITH 2025, in their Static Competition class. Looking forward to receiving my Award in person on 23 October 2025 at the WCB Awards Luncheon in London
I am Richard Bent FWCB, a Silver medal holder from the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths (WCB) and 5 times their National Champion. I offer Experience Days in the Basic Skills of Blacksmithing from my well equipped workshop/forge in Halwell, Nr. Totnes, Devon.
I offer tuition to the absolute beginner and those who may wish to build on previous experience. The student will leave the course having produced several different projects and an overwhelming sense of achievement.
My first interest in blacksmithing was watching Blacksmiths working at County Agricultural Shows. I was Hooked! I had to learn more! How? Where? No You Tube! Only books from which to learn. No Craft Courses in those days!
I read and practised all I could, then started in business as a self taught blacksmith. I watched other blacksmiths and ‘stole’ with my eyes!
So here I am, with over 45 years experience, running my own courses; I offer all students over the age of 17 years the opportunity to be me for a day! You will create some beautiful pieces to “Wow” your family and friends.

Blacksmithing experience - spend a day in the forge
"Excellent taster to Blacksmithing. Richard gave the perfect balance of tuition to hands on practice. We had a chance to use a lot of the equipment in his workshop and under his supervision we were able to create our own masterpiece’s. "
Red Anvil School of Blacksmithing responded:
"Thank you Stan, it was great to meet you and to give you the chance of exploring my world. The pieces you created involved a lot of different techniques which you tackled extremely well and should be very proud of your achievement! Richard "
"My boyfriend and I enjoyed the blacksmithing course today as complete beginners. Richard was great at demonstrating and explaining techniques. After an introduction, we were left to be creative and explore the techniques we had been shown with the large array of tools and equipment. Richard helped us to create our visions and was very patient when I needed a bit of extra help. We are really happy with the poppies that we made and are looking forward to finding a spot in the garden for them."
Red Anvil School of Blacksmithing responded:
"Thank you Catherine, it was great to meet you both. I am pleased you enjoyed the experience and were able to explore your creative abilities. Your completed projects were beautifully created, and no mean feat!
Richard "
"Just an absolute pleasure from start to finish’s, and a real escape from everyday life. Instructions was authoritative as you’d expect from such an experienced craftsperson but relaxed and friendly as well. We were supervised but allowed to experiment and try out our own designs. The kids are delighted by the mouse figure we were guided in making in the afternoon, and the garden ornament I made in the morning looks great. "
Red Anvil School of Blacksmithing responded:
"Thank you Adam, you did so well tackling a project with great enthusiasm and ability. I’m so pleased you enjoyed your experience and the family are thrilled with your mouse.

"What a superb experience, much more difficult than I thought but really enjoyed watching Richard’s skill at the anvil !!!
I hope that I will get the opportunity to return for another session and make something a little more useful 🤞"
Red Anvil School of Blacksmithing responded:
