I am a small-scale potter, based in Lancaster UK. I teach locally & create handmade, limited edition ceramics from my studio. You can purchase these online or by visiting my stockists, listed below.
“I got into ceramics years ago – a chance to get away from the stress of the world. A chance to sink into creativity. My work is fuelled by moments spent in nature: the kind which leave you trailing behind the group because you became overly invested in redirecting a lost ant, or in finding the perfect piece of sea glass.
Part of my work as a potter is to make functional work for others. Your coffee mug, your paint palette. I craft these with the same care and attention as I make my own art, because I know they will end up in use on a regular basis.
In 2019 I survived an unexpected cardiac arrest. My rehab took place during the first lockdown. Making pots, trips to the sea and walks in the woods helped me get through. As a lifelong perfectionist, I had to learn to embrace imperfection and the messiness of life. There isn’t much you can do about surgical scars, short-term memory loss and the need to take a nap every couple of hours.
I’ve recovered now, but the experience continues to influence my work. I now enhance the things I would have previously seen as imperfections: thumb prints, organic rims, visible seams. I see these maker marks as part of a story of humanity. A story that has been pinched and pressed into ceramic vessels for thousands of years. I love that about handmade pottery, and I hope you do too.”
