I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop. Pam's teaching approach was well structured and she gave me the confidence to move through the various stages using different brushes, colour blending etc to the final monochrome painting of still life. I liked the airy studio, an ideal location to paint. Even though the journey from Sale took over an hour I would seriously consider returning for another workshop.
Response from Pam Smart Studio:Hi Geoff
A small group so lots of individual advice and help. An excellent introduction to painting in acrylics with information on materials: papers, paints & brushes. We began with setting up a palette and which brush to use, colour mixing and hints on how to make new colours. Pam gave a very clear step by step demo and we created an attractive small flower painting. After a delicious lunch, we spent the afternoon on a larger tonal painting which encouraged us to use all the brushes Pam had provided and to achieve interesting light and shade effects. Pam is a kind and thorough tutor and everyone achieved excellent results. All techniques were very well-explained with lots of additional useful information. Highly recommended for complete beginners and also for people who have done some painting already but want to learn proper techniques.
Response from Pam Smart Studio:Hi Cath
Having never gone through the stages of acrylic painting before, the steps that Pam demonstrated to us were clear and very helpful. The activities helped me to gain an insight into different brushes and techniques and colour. This enabled me to produce a painting which showed the skills I had learnt. The group was small enough so that Pam could spend time one-to-one with us all. The materials provided were well organised and the space itself was perfect for a creative day of painting. Plus her lunch was absolutely delicious. The best thing to do on a cold, wet and windy day.
Response from Pam Smart Studio:Hi Louise
l really enjoyed the course and l'm still painting my design.
Response from Pam Smart Studio:Hi Jean
Pam gave a very detailed explanation of the procedure. She provided back up materials to ensure everybody had all the resources required to create a good quality piece art. Pam was on hand to make suggestions and give help when needed. She brought the team together during, and, at the end of the session to share views and appreciate each others work. I would recommend this course. A very enjoyable day.
Response from Pam Smart Studio:Hi Ann
Pam is an excellent tutor and her workshops are delightful. The studio does indeed have a view and is a perfect place for an arty day. In spite of my struggles to get there on time because of snow in my part of the world, I managed to complete the project with Pam's advice on what parts I could skip over. Lunch was delicious too. I have no doubt that I'll be in more Pam Smart workshops in the future.
Response from Pam Smart Studio:Hi Dot
Fabulous day with Pam ... as always. I couldn't recommend Pam's workshops highly enough. The ideas and tutoring that you get from Pam is really helpful and helps you to create original and quirky pieces of art. I was so inspired I went home and continued on the piece through Saturday evening and all day Sunday. For anyone with an interest in painting, drawing, collage - this is definitely the workshop for you - and whats more you get a lovely lunch and unlimited cups of coffee. Thanks Pam - another successful day!

A marvelous day.
We joined a mixed group of all levels to enjoy drawing and observational skills.
Everyone really enjoyed learning something new and some have mentioned booking in for another course already.
The teaching methods and demonstrations provided were excellent. Everyone felt Pam was very helpful and encouraging, taking time to discuss everyone's progress and suggesting how to improve. The quality of art materials was superb. The natural light in the studio was wonderful, we will all be recommending your art courses. Relaxing, practical and fun.
The tuition, lunch and venue was above and beyond all expectations.
Response from Pam Smart Studio:Hi Nicola
I wholeheartedly recommend Pam’s course on Expressive Landscapes. The course was well run, the studio was lovely and light and the lunch delicious. Add to this Pam’s encouraging and confidence building approach to teaching - it was a treat to attend. Her easy going nature helped me to enjoy a different way of painting landscapes and gave me much needed confidence. I look forward to attending more.

My partner and I attended Pam's Autumn Sketchbook course last year. The studio is bright and airy with a beautiful view, and we had a very enjoyable day exploring different sketching techniques with an autumn theme.
The first task was to make our own sketchbook and this was a really good ice breaker to overcome any worries about our abilities. We experimented with Brusho to produce some altered papers with an autumnal colour theme, which we used to make the cover of our sketch book, as well keeping some to one side for some collage later in the afternoon. We then used different leaves, seed heads, fruit and vegetables as inspiration to create autumnal sketches using different techniques and mediums in our books. Watercolour, acrylic, pencil, fibre pens, stick pens with dipping ink and collage were all explored as we worked on a range of different surfaces with Pam giving clear demonstrations and guidance at every stage. Pam took photos of our work as it progressed and at the end of the afternoon she had turned these into a 5 minute film show so that we could enjoy everyone's work.
The day was well structured and paced and suitable for all levels, and Pam's tuition and the materials used were excellent. We both came away with a sketchbook to be proud of and I have since added further sketches to complete the book. Having enjoyed this course we booked on two further courses with Pam. I mustn't forget to mention the wonderful lunch that Pam provides as well!
We would both highly recommend Pam's workshops - an enjoyable day out with a tangible and satisfying outcome.

I took the Introduction to Acrylics course run by Pam Smart last year and it was excellent and well structured, as well as varied in the activities provided.
The tutor started with guiding us through a useful exercise explaining the various marks on paper that different types of brushes produce. This was then followed by an exercise to produce a colour chart, which we completed ourselves by mixing the appropriate colours according to her explanations and instructions. Pam had prepared a circle chart on an A3 sheet (which I have pinned up in my craft room now.) We also did a painted exercise and a larger piece in the afternoon.
Because of Pam’s careful guidance, a fair degree of success was achieved at each stage. I can highly recommend this, and other courses of Pam’s ( such as the Landscapes ) and trust you will have a most enjoyable day with great lunch, and the experience of a very skilled teacher, with nice calm, positive approach.
Response from Pam Smart Studio:Hi Sally
I had a great day at Pam’s winter watercolours workshop.
Pam is very experienced artist and teacher. The workshop was help in Pam’s beautiful home studio. Pam provided all the equipment and materials and she served a delicious lunch and provided refreshments throughout the day.
Pam gave me lots of personal attention and guided me through each stage. I learned and explored new techniques and this gave me the confidence and inspiration to develop my use of watercolours.
I came away with a mounted painting that I felt very proud of and it is now hanging in a prime position at home!
I would highly recommend Pam’s workshops and will definitely be booking another one.

Expressive Landscapes: This course provided an excellent opportunity to develop a more expressive approach to landscape painting. The day was well structured with demonstrations and clear guidance to enable all members to feel comfortable and make progress. The studio provides an excellent working environment and the lunch was yummy yummy. Yes, I will be back later in the year. Thank you Pam.
Response from Pam Smart Studio:You’re welcome Ann
This was the first of Pam's courses I had been on and I found it very enjoyable and informative.
We started by mixing primary colours to achieve vast numbers of shades, then tried different techniques on these to obtain various effects, using salt, cling film etc. Once we had the dragonfly outlined the background was painted first, then the above techniques added and then the dragonfly was filled in.
Pam explained and demonstrated each process as we went along and I found her an excellent tutor, calm, informative and very helpful.
All materials and facilities were first class.
I enjoyed this so much I have since returned for another workshop using different techniques and finishes with excellent results, and thoroughly recommend her courses.
Response from Pam Smart Studio:Thanks for your comments Joan
I am from an art background myself, having completed my Foundation Course and as an Art specialist B.Ed (Hons) then then teaching Art in primary schools.
I found Pam to be extremely skilled as a fascillitator of a group of adults of different ages, backgrounds and experiences.
She took her time to explain, by demonstrating various different ways to achieve a background for our work and then encouraged us to explore, find our own ways, have fun and don’t worry about the outcome. I enjoyed using media I haven’t used for a while or never tried.
The quality of resources was excellent, varied and we were able to use photos to guide us and original pieces to give us ideas.
Although I have had a lot of training, I found the drawing quite challenging, trying to get the dragonfly in proportion and the right shape. Pam had showed us different ways to make it easier. She enabled me to do the best I could and when I got a bit “stuck” I asked her for some assistance to tweak the last bit so I was happy with it.
She demonstrated ways to achieve the details in different ways that we were able to do to the best of our ability and take a personal response to doing the work.
I was thrilled with my piece, so much so I am using it for my business artwork as a symbol of transformation. It’s not perfect and that’s ok.
Pam is a very calm, professional and positive teacher, with a nice sense of humour and her studio space and hospitality are outstanding.
I regularly share and promote her work, exhibitions etc and I highly recommend connecting and working with her.
Response from Pam Smart Studio:Hi Cath
Had a great day on this workshop learning how to abstract elements of architecture and combine into a cohesive composition using collage, watercolour and acrylic paints. Pam is an excellent tutor giving very clear guidance and working at an appropriate pace for everyone in the group. I came away inspired to create further compositions - the architecture of my home town and industrial architecture around the canals and railways. Delicious lunch and lovely studio too! Highly recommended.
Response from Pam Smart Studio:Thanks Lyn
I hadn’t done any art for many years and after doing the exploring drawing course with Pam I was really inspired to buy some materials and start doing some drawing at home. The structure of the day and explanation of the activities was really clear and helped me to make progress through the day. It really gave me my confidence back. I particularly enjoyed the large scale drawing with oil pastels. Everything was provided and a great lunch too. I will definitely be going back.
